HII Unveils ROMULUS Family of Unmanned Surface Vessels

In a significant advancement in maritime technology, Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII), a key player in the defense sector based in the United States, has introduced a new family of unmanned surface vessels (USVs) named ROMULUS. This innovative line of vessels leverages the sophisticated Odyssey Autonomous Control System developed by HII.

At the core of the ROMULUS family is the ROMULUS 190, a state-of-the-art USV measuring 190 feet (58 meters) in length. Currently under construction in collaboration with partners Beaux Brothers, Beier Integrated Systems, and Incat Crowther, this vessel is noteworthy not just for its size but also for its advanced capabilities.

The ROMULUS 190 is designed with a commercial-standard hull optimized for serial production, enabling efficient manufacturing. With a top speed exceeding 25 knots (approximately 46 kilometers or 29 miles per hour), the vessel promises impressive performance metrics. Additionally, it is capable of covering more than 2,500 nautical miles (around 2,878 miles or 4,630 kilometers) without needing to refuel.

One of the standout features of the ROMULUS 190 is its capacity for cargo, capable of transporting four 40-foot (12-meter) ISO containers, making it not only a formidable platform for military applications but also a versatile solution for various logistical needs. This combination of speed, range, and cargo capacity positions the ROMULUS 190 as a significant asset in the future landscape of unmanned maritime operations.

HII’s announcement underscores the growing trend toward integrating advanced artificial intelligence and autonomous systems in naval and defense applications, reflecting a shift in operational paradigms within the industry. As these technologies evolve, the potential for transformative impacts on maritime strategy and logistics becomes increasingly apparent.
