What is JAG Entry?
🔹 The JAG entry is open to law graduates (LLB) who are registered with the Bar Council of India.
🔹 No written exam – direct SSB interview based on merit and academic profile.
🔹 Both men and women can apply. The shortlisting is highly competitive and based on:
- Academic scores
- Internship/experience
- Law college reputation
- Extracurricular & leadership roles
🛡️ Once selected, you will serve in the Indian Army/Navy as part of the Judge Advocate General’s Branch—advising military commanders, handling courts-martial, and dealing with military and international law.
Stage-wise SSB Preparation Strategy
🔹 1. Screening Test (Day 1)
✅ PPDT (Picture Perception & Discussion Test):
- Show clarity of thought and structured narration.
- Create law-related or leadership-based stories with a positive outcome.
- Practice storytelling with quick observation skills.
✅ Tips:
- Practice 10 PPDT images daily.
- Structure: Introduction → Plot → Solution → Ending.
✅ OIR (Officer Intelligence Rating):
- Practice reasoning & verbal/non-verbal aptitude.
- Use books like RS Aggarwal, and apps for mock OIR tests.
🔹 2. Psychological Tests (Day 2)
🧠 These include TAT, WAT, SRT & SDT.
✅ TAT (Thematic Apperception Test):
- Frame stories with themes like justice, truth, leadership, problem-solving.
- As a law grad, your stories can subtly show legal awareness without sounding preachy.
✅ WAT (Word Association Test):
- Words like “Law”, “Justice”, “Crime”, “Discipline”, etc. will test your values.
- Frame responses reflecting fairness, leadership, honesty, and decision-making.
✅ SRT (Situation Reaction Test):
- Include rational thinking, prioritization, legal awareness, and calm responses.
- Ex: “A junior is wrongly accused…” → Take charge, investigate facts, ensure justice.
✅ SDT (Self Description Test):
- Be authentic but highlight qualities of a responsible and law-abiding leader.
3. GTO Tasks (Day 3 & 4)
These are designed to check teamwork, communication, stamina, and leadership.
✅ GD (Group Discussion):
- Practice defence, national & legal topics (e.g., UCC, AFSPA, women in combat, international treaties).
- Speak with facts and balanced views.
✅ Lecturette:
- Prepare 40–50 topics.
- Frame your lecture: Introduction → Facts → Opinion → Conclusion.
✅ Group Planning, PGT, HGT, Command Task, etc.:
- Show presence of mind, logic, and a positive attitude.
- Be supportive, not dominating.
4. Personal Interview (Any Day)
This is where your law background comes under the spotlight.
💼 Key Questions You Must Prepare:
- Why JAG and not Judiciary or Corporate Law?
- What is military law, and how is it different from civilian law?
- Explain Court Martial Process.
- What do you know about Army/Navy Acts?
- Opinion on AFSPA, Human Rights in Conflict Zones, Geneva Conventions.
- Landmark judgments – Kesavananda Bharati, Maneka Gandhi, Vishaka guidelines, etc.
- Any internships in litigation, law firms, or legal aid?
✅ Be confident, calm, and truthful. Don’t try to impress with jargon—speak like a lawyer with leadership.
Daily Preparation Routine

- 30 mins – Newspaper Reading (Legal & Defence news)
- 30 mins – Psych Test Practice
- 30 mins – Lecturette / GD Topics Preparation
- 15 mins – Physical Fitness & Obstacle Familiarization
