A pivotal moment for the financial welfare of personnel in the Assam Rifles unfolded on April 17, 2025, when a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Assam Rifles, India’s oldest paramilitary force, and ICICI Bank. This ceremony took place at the Headquarters of the Director General of Assam Rifles (DGAR) and aims to enhance the financial support available to both serving and retired members of the force through a specially designed salary package.
The signing ceremony saw the presence of Lt Gen Vikas Lakhera, AVSM, SM, Director General of Assam Rifles, along with various officers, Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs), and other ranks from the headquarters. ICICI Bank was represented by Vishal Batra, the Business Head for the Defence & Armed Forces Ecosystem, who provided an overview of the exclusive benefits included in the newly launched salary package. Notable features of the package include zero-balance accounts, unlimited free ATM transactions nationwide, preferential allotment of lockers, and a lifetime-free premium credit card. These benefits extend to personnel across all ranks, covering both new recruits and retirees up to the age of 80.
Beyond banking services, ICICI Bank also took the opportunity to announce its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives during the event. The bank committed to sponsoring students from the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) from the North East, ensuring their admission into prestigious Sainik Schools. Additionally, ICICI Bank contributed sports equipment to the Assam Rifles Rowing Team, underlining its dedication to supporting the force in areas beyond financial services.
Lt Gen Vikas Lakhera, who has been at the helm of the Assam Rifles since August 2024, underscored the significance of collaborations such as this one in enhancing the welfare of the force, which is often called the “Sentinels of the North East.” Similarly, Vishal Batra expressed pride in partnering with the Assam Rifles, stating, “We are honored to partner with Assam Rifles to offer banking solutions that recognize the dedication and service of our uniformed heroes.”
This recent collaboration is a continuation of the longstanding relationship between the Assam Rifles and ICICI Bank, which has previously included initiatives like scholarships for economically disadvantaged students. The MoU is anticipated to strengthen the ties between the two organizations, ensuring improved financial security and support for the personnel who dedicate themselves to serving the nation in some of its most challenging regions.
