A cutting-edge 3D Ophthalmic Microscope, the ZEISS ARTEVO 850, has been inaugurated at the Army Hospital (Research & Referral). The ceremony was officiated by Lieutenant General Avinash Das, who took charge as Commandant of this premier military medical institution.
This advanced ophthalmic system marks a significant milestone in the modernization efforts of the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS), making it the first of its kind to be implemented in any government facility across India. The initiative has been driven by the strategic vision of Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, the Director General of AFMS.
The ZEISS ARTEVO 850 is designed to revolutionize surgical precision and enhance training capabilities. It enables heads-up digital surgery, allowing for superior ergonomics and comfort for surgeons, particularly during lengthy and intricate procedures. One of its most notable features is the integration of real-time intraoperative Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) imaging, which provides ophthalmic surgeons with the ability to visualize microscopic details beyond traditional methods. This advancement not only boosts surgical precision but also enhances safety and clinical outcomes.
Moreover, the digital interface of the microscope serves as a valuable educational tool. It offers high-definition live visualization, which can be leveraged for training medical trainees and specialists. This initiative is crucial for developing next-generation surgical teams within AFMS hospitals.
Under the leadership of Lt Gen Avinash Das, the Army Hospital (R&R) aims to cement its status as a center of excellence in healthcare, research, and innovation. The integration of the ARTEVO 850 underscores the hospital’s dedication to delivering state-of-the-art medical care to serving personnel, veterans, and their families, reinforcing the AFMS’s commitment to remaining at the forefront of medical advancements in India.
