India Hosted Global South Summit
Why In News
- India is set to host the 3rd Voice of Global South Summit on August 17, 2024, marking another significant effort to unify developing countries under a common agenda. The summit, which will be held virtually, is designed to address pressing global challenges that disproportionately affect the Global South, such as conflicts, food and energy security, and climate change.
About Summit
- The initiative, driven by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of inclusive development—’Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas’—builds on the country’s philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, or ‘the world is one family.’
- This year’s summit, themed “An Empowered Global South for a Sustainable Future,” will include a Leaders’ Session, hosted by Prime Minister Modi, and 10 Ministerial Sessions. These discussions will cover topics ranging from sustainable energy solutions and global governance to youth engagement and climate change.
- The previous two editions of VOGSS were held on January 12-13, 2023, and November 17, 2023, respectively, both in virtual format. These summits saw the participation of over 100 countries from the Global South, with discussions feeding into the G-20 Summit agenda under India’s presidency last year, particularly influencing the G-20 New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration.
- This year, in addition to fostering dialogue among Global South countries, the summit is expected to strengthen the collective voice of developing nations on the global stage.
- It underscores India’s role as a key facilitator in bringing together countries with shared concerns and aspirations for a more equitable world order.
