The Government of India has made a significant announcement to grant lifelong complimentary railway travel to recipients of prestigious gallantry awards, specifically the Sena Medal, Nau Sena Medal, and Vayu Sena Medal. This initiative aims to honor the bravery and sacrifices of Armed Forces personnel and their families, highlighting the government’s commitment to their welfare.
Under the newly introduced scheme, awardees will enjoy free travel for life in First Class, 2 AC, and AC Chair Car compartments on Indian Railways. Moreover, each recipient is entitled to bring one companion along at no extra charge, thereby further facilitating comfortable travel for those recognized for their gallantry.
The benefits of this initiative do not stop at the award recipients. The scheme also extends to their families, encompassing spouses (including widows and widowers) for as long as they remain unmarried, as well as parents of unmarried posthumous awardees. This provision underscores a commitment not only to the individual award winners but also to their families, ensuring they receive continued respect and support.
In a parallel move, Indian Railways has initiated a “Framework of Cooperation” with the Army to enhance employment opportunities for ex-servicemen. This framework includes significant reservations for retired military personnel in various railway posts: 10% reservation for Level-2 and above positions, 20% for Level-1 posts, and a 5-10% reservation for retired Agniveers. For the upcoming year 2024-25, roughly 14,788 positions are set aside to accommodate these veterans, with over 5,000 Level-1 posts already in the recruitment pipeline.
This initiative not only aims to facilitate a smoother transition for ex-servicemen into civilian life but also strives to raise awareness about available job opportunities. By building a structured support ecosystem for veterans and Agniveers, the government demonstrates its dedication to integrating those who have served into the workforce effectively.
