India Successfully Test-Fires ASTRA Missile from Light Combat Aircraft AF MK1

In a noteworthy advancement for India’s self-sufficient defence capabilities, the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) AF MK1 successfully conducted a test-firing of the ASTRA Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Missile (BVRAAM) off the coast of Chandipur, Odisha. This significant event took place on March 12, 2025, and was orchestrated by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) in partnership with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), and the Indian Air Force (IAF).

The test launch illustrated the missile’s exceptional capability to engage and neutralize airborne targets with high precision, marking a direct hit on the target drone. According to officials, the advanced subsystems of both the LCA AF MK1 and the ASTRA missile performed admirably, achieving all mission parameters and objectives successfully. This accomplishment further enhances the combat readiness of the LCA AF MK1, bringing it significantly closer to operational deployment.

The ASTRA missile, designed and developed by DRDO, stands out as India’s premier Beyond Visual Range missile, capable of engaging enemy aircraft at distances exceeding 100 kilometers. It is equipped with cutting-edge guidance and navigation technologies, ensuring a high probability of kill and excellent targeting accuracy. Having already been inducted into the IAF, the ASTRA missile is a pivotal component of India’s aerial combat strategy.

Furthermore, this successful test represents a substantial advancement in the development of the LCA AF MK1A variant, which is envisioned as a modern fighter jet boasting advanced avionics, electronic warfare capabilities, and improved weapons integration. Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh extended congratulations to the DRDO, IAF, ADA, HAL, and all stakeholders for their collective effort in achieving this success. Dr. Samir V Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of the DRDO, also recognized the contributions of the scientists, engineers, and technicians whose efforts were instrumental in this achievement.

This milestone highlights India’s dedication to self-reliance in defence technology in line with the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative and bolsters the IAF’s capabilities with indigenous weapon systems. The successful integration of the ASTRA missile with the LCA AF MK1 marks a significant step toward a fully indigenous fleet of fighter aircraft, enhancing the nation’s security and operational readiness.
