India To Participate in Ukraine Peace Talks

In the midst of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, sappers from the Armed Forces of Ukraine train in the Donetsk region. A foreign ministry spokeswoman said during a news briefing on Thursday that India will participate in Ukraine peace talks hosted by Saudi Arabia on August 5 and 6.

Saudi Arabia has invited Western nations, Ukraine, and some important developing countries to examine the peace proposal suggested earlier this year by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. According to Arindam Bagchi, a spokesperson for India’s foreign ministry, New Delhi has been invited to a meeting in Jeddah sponsored by Saudi Arabia.

“India will take part in this event.” “Our participation is consistent with our long-held belief that dialogue and diplomacy are the best ways forward,” he said. Russia, which has not been invited, stated on Monday that it will monitor the talks. The Ukrainian government has stated that the Kremlin is not welcome at the discussions.

Ukraine Peace Talks
A year of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

According to Zelenskiy’s plan, all Russian forces would be withdrawn and Ukraine’s post-Soviet boundaries would be restored. On the margins of the G7 summit in Japan in May, Ukraine’s president urged India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi to join his peace initiative. Several Western governments have been frustrated by New Delhi’s refusal to denounce Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine last year. At the same time, India’s commerce with Russia has surged due to record-high oil purchases.

However, Modi assured Russian President Vladimir Putin last year that this is not a “war era.” As chair of the G20 bloc this year, India will host the September summit conference, to which US President Joe Biden, China’s Xi Jinping, Putin, and other leaders have been invited.
