Pakistan has expressed serious worries to the United States over the country’s growing defence cooperation with India, considering the move as a direct danger to the country’s security interests.
Pakistan Fears Instability in the Region
According to official sources, the US was informed through diplomatic channels that transferring advanced military hardware to India without taking Pakistan’s legitimate concerns into account would undermine strategic stability and conventional balance in the South Asian region.
According to individuals acquainted with the development, Pakistan informed the US that the acquisitions of the technologies would embolden India, putting the country’s national security interests at risk. Islamabad has made it clear to Washington that any cooperation between India and the US that undermines Pakistan’s interests will force the country to take countermeasures.
General Electric and India’s state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited plan to manufacture modern fighter jet engines in India for the country’s indigenous light combat aircraft. The United States also promised to establish a factory in India to manufacture battle-tested armed drones. For decades, Russia was India’s primary supplier of armaments, with a 65 per cent market share only a few years ago.
This shows that the US is not only willing to sell guns to India but is also open to the possibility of transferring technology, which has alarmed Pakistan. The US arms sale and technology transfer to India may be intended for China, but the development would undoubtedly alter the military balance in South Asia.
