In a significant development aimed at bolstering India’s defence capabilities, the Indian Air Force (IAF) is poised to construct a new airbase covering nearly 1,000 acres in Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh. Once completed, this facility will become the largest airbase in Central India.

Located adjacent to the existing Khajuraho Airport, the new airbase is set to emerge as a strategic center for the operational deployment of fighter and transport aircraft. This initiative is expected to enhance the IAF’s capacity for rapid deployment and logistical support across various regions of the country. Preliminary groundwork has already commenced, and the Ministry of Defence plans to initiate land acquisition early next year after obtaining the necessary approvals.

The decision to establish the airbase gained traction following a comprehensive survey of potential locations, including Prayagraj, Jhansi, and Gwalior. Ultimately, Khajuraho was identified as the most viable option due to its strategic positioning, lower population density, and potential for future growth, according to insights from local Member of Parliament Vishnu Dutt Sharma.

The site is situated in a plateau region characterized by favorable weather conditions and minimal civilian disruption, making it ideal for uninterrupted flying operations throughout the year. Its close proximity to national highways and existing air routes is also anticipated to facilitate swift logistical movements and effective command operations.

This new base is expected to complement the existing Gwalior Air Force Station, which will enhance operational coverage and balance within India’s central corridor. Officials have indicated that the upcoming facility will be crucial for future combat missions, joint operations, and quick-response deployments, particularly in light of insights gained from recent military operations such as Operation Sindoor.

In addition to its military significance, the project is expected to foster regional economic development by improving local infrastructure and generating employment opportunities in the Bundelkhand area. The dual focus on defence and regional development is set to reinforce Khajuraho’s standing not only as a prominent tourist destination but also as an essential asset in India’s national security framework.
