The Indian Air Force (IAF) is embracing cutting-edge and immersive technology such as artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality (VR) to improve operational efficiency and training effectiveness.
The Indian Air Force has integrated AI into its machine planning systems and used Virtual Reality Simulations for cadet training at various Air Force Stations (AFS) around the country as part of its commitment to self-reliance and the Atmanirbhar Bharat project.
Artificial Intelligence: The AI Centres in the Indian Air Force
The Indian Air Force has established an AI Centre of Excellence at Rajokri, New Delhi, in collaboration with UDAAN (Unit for Digitisation, Automation, Artificial Intelligence, and Application Networking). Additionally, the IAF has commissioned Big Data Analytics, a Machine Learning Platform.
The IAF has also deployed an application that collects electronic intelligence from itself and other intelligence organisations and integrates it into a single structure for a Comprehensive Electronic Order of Battle.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) has created an AI-based Campaign Planning and Analysis System (CPAS), which is utilised to provide functionality and efficacy for campaign planning and debriefing solutions for all Indian Air Force aircraft.
Artificial Intelligence: Benefits of Virtual Reality Systems and AI in the Indian Air Force
Fighter pilots conducting stage two training at AFS Hakimpet and other Air Force academies appear to benefit from hands-on experience with VR headsets. Cadets can virtually practise flying in a simulated environment on the ground, gaining essential skills and confidence before flying missions in actual aircraft.
The Indigenous VR simulation has been used, which has been shown to be cost-effective and has greatly reduced the enormous costs that would have otherwise been expended on flying hours using actual aircraft. These VR headsets provide a 360-degree perspective of the flying experience and have improved the situation awareness and decision-making abilities of training pilots.
The IAF aspires to reach improved levels of efficiency, preparedness, and success in securing the nation’s airspace and reacting to humanitarian needs by incorporating AI and VR technologies into training and operations, according to officials.
Artificial Intelligence: Indigenous AI in Machine Planning Systems
The IAF is also making efforts in establishing indigenous AI-based machine systems and has partnered with numerous defence companies. Using domestic technologies, the IAF is developing modules for machine planning, radar, and other systems. This decision not only improves operational effectiveness but also boosts India’s defence capabilities by lowering reliance on foreign technologies.
AI integration provides the IAF with enhanced data analytics and decision support tools, as well as accelerates mission planning and execution. According to officials, the Indian Air Force’s adoption of immersive technology and commitment to indigenous innovation indicates its determination to remain at the forefront of modern warfare capabilities.
Artificial Intelligence: Collaborations
The IAF’s principal role is to protect Indian airspace, which will be supported by a comprehensive network of sensors. To do this, the IAF is working with major S&T (Science and Technology) Institutions in India, including Bharat Electricals Limited (BEL), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Kharagpur and IIT Jabalpur).
