Indian Army Havildar Donates Son's Organs, Saving Six Lives in an Act of Remarkable Sacrifice

In a heart-wrenching yet uplifting story of selflessness, Havildar Naresh Kumar of the 10th Battalion, The Mahar Regiment, has made the poignant decision to donate the organs of his 18-year-old son, Arshdeep Singh, following a tragic road accident. Arshdeep, who succumbed to his injuries on February 8, 2025, was declared brain-dead at Command Hospital, Western Command.

In the face of profound grief, Naresh Kumar chose to turn his family’s tragedy into a beacon of hope for others, ultimately saving the lives of six patients afflicted with chronic illnesses.

The organ donation process was efficiently managed by the Army transplant team, known for their expertise. They successfully harvested and transported Arshdeep’s organs to various medical facilities, enabling life-saving transplants.

The liver and one kidney were promptly transferred to the Army Hospital (Research and Referral) in New Delhi. This critical transfer was facilitated through a green corridor established by military police and dispatched via an Indian Air Force aircraft, ensuring minimal delay for the essential surgeries.

Additionally, Arshdeep’s second kidney and pancreas were allocated to a patient at PGIMER, Chandigarh, who had been battling Type I Diabetes combined with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). This generous act provided the patient with a renewed opportunity for life and health.

Moreover, Arshdeep’s corneas were preserved at the Eye Bank of Command Hospital, destined for future transplantation, offering the possibility of restored vision to those suffering from visual impairments.

The Command Hospital, recognized as the Best Organ Retrieval Centre by the Government of India, has lauded Havildar Naresh Kumar’s decision as a remarkable testament to compassion and sacrifice. In a heartfelt statement, hospital authorities expressed their admiration, asserting that this decision reflects extraordinary devotion to humanity. They emphasized that through his choice, Naresh Kumar ensured his son’s legacy would endure, granting him a form of immortality by saving others.

This noble gesture has resonated deeply within the community and among the military fraternity, shedding light on the critical importance of organ donation. Arshdeep Singh’s legacy now thrives in the lives he has touched, emerging as a symbol of hope from a tragedy that could have otherwise relegated his story to sorrow.

The Indian Army and Command Hospital extend their heartfelt salute to Havildar Naresh Kumar for his courage and compassion. His actions serve as a moving reminder that even against the backdrop of personal loss, individuals can generate life and hope for others, leaving an enduring impact on society.
