Havaldar Jhantu Ali Shaikh

In a solemn ceremony observing Republic Day 2026, the Indian Army posthumously awarded the Sena Medal to Havaldar Jhantu Ali Shaikh of the 6 Para (Special Forces) for his extraordinary bravery and sacrifice during a counter-terrorism operation in Jammu and Kashmir. This recognition serves as a testament to his valor and commitment to duty, particularly during a critical engagement with terrorists.

Havaldar Shaikh, originally from West Bengal, faced a dire situation on April 24, 2025, when he was mortally wounded while conducting operations in Udhampur. Despite sustaining severe injuries, he displayed remarkable courage by continuing to engage with the terrorists until he ultimately succumbed, embodying the highest ideals of military service.

The Sena Medal is one of India’s esteemed gallantry awards, intended for personnel who exhibit exceptional dedication to their duties or display extraordinary courage in challenging circumstances, often extending to combat scenarios. Havaldar Shaikh’s posthumous honor is part of a broader recognition that includes 70 gallantry awards announced this Republic Day, emphasizing the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces in their mission to protect the nation.

In tribute to his indomitable spirit, the White Knight Corps of the Indian Army recognized Havaldar Shaikh’s significant contributions to counter-insurgency efforts. His legacy is expected to inspire not only his fellow soldiers but also the nation as a whole, reinforcing the values of selfless service and determination that are foundational to the Indian defense forces.
