In a significant advancement for logistical operations, the Indian Army has unveiled an indigenously developed high-altitude monorail system designed specifically for the rugged Himalayan terrain of Arunachal Pradesh. This innovative system, crafted by the Army’s Gajraj Corps (IV Corps), is capable of functioning at elevations reaching up to 16,000 feet and has been deployed in the remote Kameng region, where traditional road connectivity is nonexistent.

The introduction of this monorail marks a crucial enhancement in the supply chain for troops stationed in some of the most inhospitable areas of the Himalayas. Recently, the Gajraj Corps shared a demonstration video on the social media platform X, highlighting the system’s operational capabilities and drawing significant public interest.

Designed to facilitate the swift, secure, and reliable transportation of vital supplies, this monorail system aims to alleviate the physical burden on soldiers. Previously, troops in these challenging environments were forced to navigate unstable slopes and narrow trails while carrying heavy loads on foot, often contending with freezing temperatures and low oxygen levels. With the new monorail, it is anticipated that transit times will be considerably reduced, and the risks associated with manual transport through perilous terrains will be minimized.

The initiative aligns with the ongoing mission of the Gajraj Corps to enhance mobility, survivability, and operational support in high-altitude regions. In addition to the monorail system, the Corps has previously inaugurated specialized grazier huts in Kumrotsar, located within the Zemithang Circle of Tawang, aimed at supporting local communities and bolstering infrastructure in border areas.

The Gajraj Corps, established in response to the 1962 Indo-China War, is headquartered in Tezpur, Assam, and is responsible for operations along the eastern sector. The Corps includes significant divisions such as the 71 Mountain Division, the 5 “Ball of Fire” Division, and the 21 “Real Horn” Division. Its dual responsibilities encompass both conventional warfare and counter-insurgency operations in the northeastern region.

The deployment of the high-altitude monorail serves as a testament to the Indian Army’s commitment to modernizing its logistical capabilities and ensuring efficient support for troops engaged in some of the world’s most arduous conditions.
