The Indian Army has announced significant reforms to the Services Selection Board (SSB) process, introducing a computer-based Stage-1 screening test by the end of 2026. This move aims to tackle the challenges of high screening-out rates and the overcrowding observed at SSB centres.
The current Stage-1 screening system, in effect since 1998, will transition to a computer-based format, enhancing the process’s objectivity, transparency, and efficiency. The Army has recognized that excessive reporting at SSB centres predominantly affects non-UPSC entries like the Technical Entry Scheme (TES), Technical Graduate Course (TGC), Short Service Commission (SSC Tech), and National Cadet Corps (NCC) entries.
To alleviate this issue, several strategies have been put in place:

Technical Graduate Course and SSC (Tech): Starting in 2027, candidates for these entries will be required to take a Combined Defence Services Technical Examination (CDSTE), which will be conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). This change aims to lower the SSB call-up ratio significantly.

NCC Entry: The selection process for NCC candidates will now prioritize graduation marks and NCC ‘C’ certificate grading. A bonus marking system will be used, resulting in a substantial reduction in the number of candidates called for the selection process.
- TES Entry: Plans are being formulated to integrate the TES with the National Defence Academy (NDA) written examination, streamlining the overall selection pipeline.
In addition to these changes, the Army has introduced improved flexibility for candidates regarding the selection process. Candidates will now have the option to select their SSB reporting dates and the selection centres, enabling a more balanced distribution of candidate load across various centres.
These reforms are designed not only to alleviate overcrowding at SSB centres but also to enhance the overall candidate experience, improve fairness, and increase efficiency in the selection process.
