In a significant advancement for both military logistics and the economy of Kashmir, the Indian Army has inaugurated its first dedicated freight train on the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL). The inaugural journey, which took place between September 12 and 13, spanned from BD Bari to Anantnag, transporting 753 metric tonnes of Advance Winter Stocking (AWS) to ensure that frontline units are adequately prepared for the upcoming winter months.
This new initiative marks a strategic shift in the Indian Army’s approach to winter preparedness by replacing traditional convoys that often faced delays due to snow-blocked mountain passes. The introduction of a rail-based supply chain provides increased speed, efficiency, and reliability, significantly enhancing operational readiness even in the face of extreme weather conditions.
Moreover, this freight train initiative is set to benefit Kashmir’s economy as well. On its return journey, the train successfully transported Kashmiri apples to markets across India, thus providing local fruit growers with faster and safer access to national supply chains. Farmers in the region have long grappled with transportation bottlenecks due to highway closures on NH-44, and the Army’s logistical support now acts as a vital lifeline for the region’s agricultural sector.
Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has welcomed this development, advocating for the introduction of special refrigerated cargo trains to further aid in the transport of perishable goods. He expressed gratitude to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and engaged in discussions with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari regarding improvements in road logistics, emphasizing the urgent need to stabilize supply chains for local growers.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha also marked this milestone by flagging off the first dedicated parcel train from Budgam to Delhi’s Adarsh Nagar. He pointed out the transformative potential of rail freight on Kashmir’s horticulture sector, suggesting a positive future for local farmers.
Beyond its logistical implications, the launch of this freight train symbolizes India’s resilience and commitment to national integration. By bolstering military preparedness while simultaneously uplifting the local economy, this initiative embodies the Army’s dual role in both defending the nation and fostering socio-economic progress in Jammu and Kashmir.
