In a significant step emphasizing the Indian Army’s commitment to modernization and operational readiness, a high-level meeting took place at the Central Command headquarters in Lucknow. Lieutenant General JS Sidana, serving as the Director General of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (DGEME) and Senior Colonel Commandant of the Corps of EME, engaged with Lieutenant General Anindya Sengupta, the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of Surya Command.
The discussions primarily addressed vital sustenance issues and outlined proactive strategies being implemented by the Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME) to elevate the Army’s preparedness for contemporary combat situations. The meeting was underscored by a formal exchange of a memento, symbolizing the spirit of collaboration between the two commands, all conducted in a setting adorned with military regalia and honors.
Post-meeting, Lieutenant General Sidana visited various EME units located in Lucknow, where he assessed their operational readiness and inspected advanced systems, including cutting-edge weaponry and unmanned aerial vehicles. During his address to the personnel, he praised their dedication and urged them to maintain exemplary technical standards.
Established in 1943, the Corps of EME has played an integral role in the technological backbone of the Indian Army. What began as a focus on electrical systems has transformed over the decades, particularly during the modernization efforts of the 1980s and 1990s, into a fundamental component of electronics and high-tech maintenance.
In addition to its operational role, Surya Command, based in Lucknow, serves as one of the Army’s seven operational commands, crucial for securing India’s northern and central territories, especially along the sensitive Indo-Tibet and Indo-Nepal borders in Uttarakhand. Originally founded during World War II in 1942, it was re-established in 1963 after the Sino-Indian War, and currently functions as a key defensive formation responsible for areas across Uttar Bharat and Madhya Bharat.
This recent high-level engagement underscores the Army’s ongoing focus on integrating advanced technologies and fostering collaboration across various commands to ensure mission readiness. Furthermore, this meeting follows a previous discussion held on May 29 between Lieutenant General Sengupta and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, which centered on enhancing security measures and improving welfare initiatives for defense veterans, indicating Surya Command’s active involvement with local governmental leadership.
