In a significant development in an ongoing investigation into cross-border espionage, Punjab Police have apprehended an active Indian Army personnel, Devinder Singh, for allegedly leaking classified military information to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). The arrest took place on July 14 in Uri, Baramulla district of Jammu & Kashmir, carried out by the State Special Operation Cell (SSOC) from SAS Nagar.
AIG Ravjot Kaur Grewal, IPS, reported that Singh, a resident of Nihalgarh in Sangrur district, was instrumental in securing sensitive documents from the Indian Army, with the involvement of former soldier Gurpreet Singh, also known as Guri or Fauji, who is currently imprisoned in Ferozepur Jail. Gurpreet had been previously arrested for allegedly running a spy network tied to the ISI.
Initial investigations have revealed that Singh and Gurpreet forged a connection in 2017 while undergoing military training in Pune. Their paths continued to cross during various postings, including locations in Sikkim and Jammu & Kashmir. Authorities suspect that Singh, while Gurpreet remained incarcerated, continued to relay classified information to him, which was then communicated to ISI operatives in Pakistan.
Following his arrest, Singh was presented in a Mohali court on July 15, which authorized a six-day police remand for further interrogation. In light of these developments, police are now concentrating on uncovering the broader implications of the espionage activities, identifying potential accomplices, and tracing the paths of the compromised intelligence.
The Punjab Police have characterized this arrest as a “significant success” in their ongoing efforts against activities deemed detrimental to national security. In an official statement, they expressed their unwavering commitment to dismantling such espionage networks and taking stringent action against individuals jeopardizing India’s sovereignty.
