MEPRO X6 Sight

In a recent strategic move to enhance its infantry capabilities, the Indian Army has chosen the MEPRO X6 fixed 6x magnification telescopic day sight for its in-service NEGEV 7.62mm light machine guns. This decision comes after an extensive multi-year tender process that involved rigorous operational evaluations and environmental testing.

The MEPRO X6 has been specifically developed to meet the unique requirements of the Indian Army and is optimized for use with the NEGEV platform. Notably, it features a tailored reticle and ranging scale that improve target identification, acquisition, and engagement capabilities at extended ranges. Its compact and lightweight design is particularly well-suited for modern infantry operations, ensuring ease of use in the field.

Key technical specifications of the MEPRO X6 include a quick-release Picatinny adaptor for fast mounting and dismounting, high-quality optics that offer a wide field of view and safe eye relief, and multiple brightness settings for its illuminated reticle, catering to various tactical scenarios. The sight operates efficiently on a single battery, with an automatic shutdown feature after one hour to conserve energy, while its robust MIL-STD construction guarantees reliability in challenging environmental and combat conditions.

The induction of the NEGEV NG-7 light machine guns, originally developed by Israel Weapon Industries (IWI), is a pivotal step in strengthening the Indian Army’s infantry firepower. The army has contracted approximately 41,000 units, with a significant portion of production taking place in India alongside local partners, achieving over 50% indigenous content in recent batches. The introduction of a high-performance daytime sight directly addresses the need for enhanced precision and effectiveness in a variety of operational settings.

Aligned with the government’s Make in India initiative, the production program underscores a commitment to local manufacturing. Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) has been awarded the tender and will act as the primary contractor for supplying the Indian Army. In a further boost to domestic capabilities, Meprolight has signed a Transfer of Technology (ToT) agreement with RRP Defense, allowing for full production of the MEPRO X6 in India. RRP Defense plans to manufacture the sights at its facility in Mumbai, distributing them to BEL.

The initial procurement includes more than 10,000 units of the MEPRO X6, with deliveries set to occur throughout 2026 and 2027. As the NEGEV light machine gun order is significantly larger, there exists considerable potential for program expansion as further needs arise during the induction process.

The strategic importance of this development cannot be overstated. By equipping the NEGEV machine guns with a specialized daytime optic, the Indian Army enhances its operational readiness and lethality. The MEPRO X6 promises to deliver improved accuracy, target discrimination, and engagement flexibility at extended ranges—key factors for success on the modern battlefield.

Golan Kalimi, Senior Vice President at Meprolight, highlighted the significance of this selection, calling it a milestone in the collaboration with India. He expressed pride in contributing advanced capabilities and fostering long-term growth in India’s defense and manufacturing landscapes.

This partnership between Meprolight, a component of Israel’s SK Group and a sister company to IWI, and Indian entities reinforces the strengthening of bilateral defense ties while promoting self-reliance in vital defense technologies. The initiative is set to deliver high-quality systems that will maintain operational readiness for years to come.
