The Indian Army has successfully completed a series of acceptance tests for the Barak-8 missile system, signaling its operational readiness for deployment within the Indian armed forces. This medium-range surface-to-air missile (MRSAM) has already seen integration into the Indian Navy and Air Force, following successful proof-of-concept trials earlier.

During the recent tests, the Barak-8 system demonstrated its effectiveness by achieving direct hits and successfully intercepting four aerial threats that approached at various speeds, altitudes, and ranges. This impressive performance showcases the system’s capabilities to respond to diverse aerial threats effectively.

The Barak-8 system has been co-developed by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The production of this missile system is carried out by Bharat Dynamics Limited in collaboration with several other domestic defense firms in India. This not only enhances indigenous defense manufacturing but also strengthens the technological capabilities of the Indian defense sector.

IAI President and CEO Boaz Levy emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating, “The Barak System provides advanced and innovative defense against a wide range of air and missile threats. The success of these tests strengthens the technological cooperation between our countries and reflects our partnership with the Indian Ministry of Defense, as well as with industries in both Israel and India.”

India’s Ministry of Defence had procured the Barak-8 MRSAM in 2017 for $1.6 billion, with a subsequent order of $777 million for a long-range variant in 2018. In a move to enhance its naval capabilities, New Delhi ordered over 70 MRSAMs from Bharat Dynamics in January 2025, which will be deployed across multiple future Indian warships.

To ensure robust operational support, IAI has established local companies in India focused on continuous maintenance and technological assistance for the Barak-8 system. The Israeli-Indian defense collaboration provides a comprehensive shield against a wide array of air and missile threats, including hostile aircraft, helicopters, and drones.

The Barak-8 system is equipped with advanced features, including a multi-mission radar, a command-and-control system, mobile launchers, and interceptor missiles with a range of up to 70 kilometers (approximately 43 miles). This cutting-edge technology positions the Barak-8 as a significant asset in India’s defense arsenal, enhancing its capabilities against potential aerial threats and bolstering national security.
