Indian Army to Enhance Firepower with Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System by 2027

The Indian Army is on track to enhance its long-range firepower with the anticipated induction of the indigenous Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) by February 2027. This sophisticated artillery system has been developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in collaboration with the private sector, and it is approaching a significant development milestone.

RP Pandey, the Project Director for ATAGS, has confirmed that the first unit is ready for the critical “first of product model test.” Successful completion of these tests will facilitate operational deployment. Once the tests are finalized, the first regiment, consisting of 18 ATAGS guns, is expected to be inducted within a year. Full deployment of the system is projected for early 2027.

In March 2025, the Ministry of Defence made substantial progress by signing contracts worth approximately ₹6,900 crore for the procurement of 307 ATAGS 155mm/52 calibre guns along with 327 high-mobility 6×6 towing vehicles. Bharat Forge Limited will supply the artillery systems, while Tata Advanced Systems Limited will provide the towing vehicles, marking a significant step in the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative.

The ATAGS is equipped with an impressive firing range exceeding 40 kilometers, advanced automation features, and high accuracy, positioning it among the most sophisticated towed artillery systems globally. Designed to phase out older legacy guns, the ATAGS will significantly bolster the Indian Army’s firepower, particularly along sensitive border regions amidst growing regional security concerns.

This initiative represents a major advancement in India’s pursuit of self-reliance in defense production, highlighting the increasing collaboration between DRDO, private industry, and the armed forces. As the Indian Army gears up for the introduction of the first regiment, the ATAGS is poised to transform India’s artillery capabilities and strengthen its standing on the international defense stage.
