Lieutenant General Abhijit S Pendharkar, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Indian Army’s Spear Corps, recently conducted an essential strategic review of operational preparedness at forward locations in Arunachal Pradesh, emphasizing the integration of drone technology to enhance battlefield efficiency. This visit took place at the Likabali Military Station, a pivotal outpost situated in India’s northeastern frontier.
During the inspection, the Indian Army’s ongoing initiatives to modernize its warfare capabilities and sustain high levels of readiness along sensitive border regions were brought to the forefront. Lt Gen Pendharkar highlighted the critical importance of employing advanced technology, focusing on the newly established Drone Excellence Centre at Likabali. This center has become instrumental in training drone operators and promoting innovation within the armed forces.
The Drone Excellence Centre, inaugurated earlier this year, is part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at boosting surveillance and combat readiness across the rugged and forested terrains of Arunachal Pradesh. Soldiers are being equipped with skills to operate First Person View (FPV) drones, which a 2024 study in the Journal of Defense Technology indicates can enhance reconnaissance efficiency by as much as 40%.
In addition to this, Lt Gen Pendharkar reviewed various indigenous drone fabrication projects currently in progress within the Corps. His approach encourages a culture of self-reliance and innovation, aligning with the Indian Army’s initiative dubbed the “Year of Reforms” set for 2025. Since taking command in August 2024, his leadership has focused on adaptability and preparedness to counter emerging threats along the border.
The strategic significance of Arunachal Pradesh was highlighted at the “Resurgent Arunachal: Integrated Approach to Security and Development” seminar held at Likabali in March 2025. This seminar promoted a balanced strategy linking border security with socio-economic growth, aligning with the wider mission of the Spear Corps.
The Corps’ increased emphasis on drone technology mirrors the complex security dynamics in the region. With ongoing ethnic unrest in neighboring Manipur and the impacts of Myanmar’s civil conflict, there is an intensified necessity for precise and agile military operations. The integration of drone systems is anticipated to substantially enhance situational awareness and operational responsiveness in these volatile conditions.
Lt Gen Pendharkar’s visit reinforces the Indian Army’s commitment to safeguarding its northeastern borders through a combination of technological advancements and operational readiness.
