The Indian Naval Hospital Ship (INHS) Asvini in Mumbai recently observed a significant ceremonial change of command as Surgeon Rear Admiral Dilip Raghavan officially transferred leadership to Surgeon Rear Admiral Manish Honwad, VSM. Surgeon Rear Admiral Raghavan has led INHS Asvini from July 2024 to September 2025, during which he significantly enhanced the hospital’s standards of patient care, infrastructure, and medical innovation. Under his guidance, the hospital received the esteemed Raksha Mantri Trophy for Best Command Hospital in 2024, solidifying its reputation as a cornerstone of military healthcare. Raghavan’s tenure is noted for the strides made in improving patient outcomes and integrating advanced medical technologies.
His successor, Surgeon Rear Admiral Honwad, comes with an impressive background in military medicine. A decorated officer, Honwad is recognized for his extensive contributions to enhancing healthcare within the Indian armed forces. INHS Asvini has a storied history, dating back to 1756 when it was established as the King’s Seamen Hospital and later commissioned as INHS Asvini in 1951. As the Indian Navy’s only Command Hospital under the Western Naval Command, the facility boasts a bed strength of 825 and caters to over 300,000 patients annually, including naval personnel, other service members, veterans, and their families.
