Artificial Intelligence in the Indian Navy: The Indian Navy is setting a future course by integrating AI technology to improve its ship systems, command and control infrastructure, and decision-making capabilities. The United States Navy’s Naval Research Laboratory established the Navy Centre for Applied Research in Artificial Intelligence in 1981, recognising AI as a transformative force in naval operations globally. Following suit, the Indian Navy has seen the enormous potential of AI and Machine Learning (AI/ML) applications in modern naval warfare.
Indian Navy Plans Artificial Intelligence Integration in Future Warships
The application of AI technology in naval operations is divided into two categories: autonomous/unmanned systems and decision sciences. These technologies have the potential to transform the way navies perform operations, respond to threats, and improve situational awareness.
One of the most important advantages of artificial intelligence in naval operations is its capacity to process massive amounts of data rapidly and efficiently. This feature enables warships to improve situational awareness by analysing data in real-time from multiple sensors, radars, and other sources. As a result, there is a thorough and up-to-date understanding of the maritime environment, including the presence of possible risks.
AI is increasingly being used by navies throughout the world to enhance their fleets. The US Department of Defence (DoD) has recognised AI’s strategic importance, particularly in response to the mounting challenges posed by countries such as China, which has made significant advances in AI technology with strong government support. AI can provide military and economic benefits by allowing for faster and more informed decision-making.
