Late Petty Officer Deepak Kumar of the Indian Navy has been awarded the Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak posthumously, recognizing his exceptional courage and selfless sacrifice in saving human lives. The esteemed honor was bestowed upon his widow, Mrs. Raushani Kumari, by Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff, during a solemn Naval Investiture Ceremony held in Mumbai.

Petty Officer Kumar’s act of bravery occurred on September 14, 2024, at the Sariya Waterfalls in Devarapalli, Andhra Pradesh. Despite facing treacherous conditions, he courageously attempted to rescue an individual who was being swept away by turbulent waters. His extraordinary efforts, marked by a fearless dedication to duty, ultimately led to a tragic outcome, as both he and the person he sought to save were overpowered by the strong currents.
