An Iranian-backed hacking group known as Cyber Toufan has claimed responsibility for breaching the systems of 17 Israeli defense contractors, subsequently posting classified plans for Australia’s AS21 Redback infantry fighting vehicle online. The hackers shared a cache of sensitive information, including 3D models and blueprints, via Telegram, revealing that this data was obtained through a supply chain company named MAYA Technologies, which they infiltrated over the past year.

Australia has committed an investment of 7 billion Australian dollars (approximately $4.5 billion) to develop the Redback vehicle, aiming to modernize its military capabilities by replacing the aging M113AS4 armored personnel carriers. The program encompasses the production of 129 vehicles, with manufacturing taking place in Geelong, located in the southwest of Melbourne. The first deliveries of these vehicles are scheduled to commence in 2027, with the entire fleet expected to be complete by the end of 2028.

Among the companies affected by the cyber breach is Elbit Systems, a prominent Israeli defense contractor headquartered in Haifa, which is tasked with providing advanced turrets for the Redbacks under a separate agreement valued at 920 million Australian dollars (around $601 million). The leaked data has also included information regarding discussions on the procurement of Israel’s Spike NLOS long-range anti-tank missiles, developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems.

In a statement reported by Cyber Daily, the group proclaimed, “We, in Cyber Toufan, announce that we have hacked…companies that directly and indirectly serve the Zionist defense and military industries, and have obtained tens of terabytes of personal data, administrative and technical documents, audio calls, and video recordings of these criminals.” The hackers released images and security footage featuring employees of MAYA, Elbit, and Rafael, claiming to have identified more than 60 individuals involved in weapons development.

The group hinted at future leaks, stating, “Some weapon designs that we received from MAYA, are manufactured in partnership with various countries and valued at hundreds millions of dollars, part of which has not been released yet. We might leak some of it when needed… Stay tuned.”

The collaboration between Australia and Israeli defense firms, particularly in the Redback program, has attracted criticism due to the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Nevertheless, Australian Defense Industry Minister Pat Conroy has emphasized the significance of reliance on Israeli technology for enhancing the capabilities of the Australian Defense Force. He remarked during a recent military technology convention, “First, we haven’t supplied weapons or ammunition to Israel for at least the last five years, and especially since the conflict with Gaza began. In terms of them supplying the [Australian Defence Force]…we make no apology for ensuring that our soldiers, sailors, and aviators have the best equipment to protect Australia’s interests and promote deterrence in our region, which includes sourcing parts from companies throughout the world.”
