Iraq Receives Two H225M Caracal Helicopters from Airbus as Part of 14-Helicopter Deal

Iraq has marked a significant step in enhancing its military capabilities with the recent delivery of two H225M Caracal medium-lift helicopters from Airbus. This delivery is a part of a larger contract signed last year for a total of 14 helicopters, aimed at modernizing and strengthening the Iraqi Air Force.

The helicopters were handed over to the Iraqi Ministry of Defense in Baghdad and are expected to be formally integrated into the Iraqi Air Force within the month, with operational readiness anticipated by June. The subsequent six helicopters from the order are scheduled to arrive between June and October, with the final batch expected by early 2026.

This acquisition not only reflects a growing defense partnership between Iraq and France but also serves to reinforce Iraq’s aerial capabilities following the recent withdrawal of US troops from the region. The introduction of the H225M Caracal helicopters is viewed as a crucial enhancement for Iraq’s military operations.

The H225M Caracal, developed by Airbus, is recognized for its versatility in various military operations, ranging from troop transport to casualty evacuation and combat search and rescue missions. Each helicopter can accommodate up to 28 troops or carry a payload of up to 12,500 pounds (approximately 5,670 kilograms). With a maximum speed of 201 miles per hour (324 kilometers per hour), the Caracal is designed to meet the rigorous demands of modern warfare.

The H225M Caracal is not only being adopted by Iraq but is also utilized by several other countries, including Brazil and Indonesia. Notably, the Netherlands has ordered 12 units to replace its aging AS532 Cougar helicopters, which have fulfilled roles in specialized forces operations.

This new acquisition marks a pivotal moment for Iraq as it seeks to bolster its defense infrastructure and operational readiness in a dynamic security environment.
