Israel is taking significant steps to enhance its domestic security by distributing small arms to around 10,000 reserve soldiers across the country. This initiative comes in response to lessons learned from the October 2023 attack, which ignited the ongoing conflict between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government and Hamas, the Palestinian militant group.
The recent conflict highlighted vulnerabilities, particularly for citizens living along the Gaza border, who felt unprotected for extended periods during the assault. Reports indicate that local emergency squads were left without immediate access to necessary weapons, prompting the Israeli government to reassess its security measures.
As part of this new security strategy, reserve soldiers will receive standard-issue M4 and M16 assault rifles, along with magazines and combat gear. These firearms will be distributed to the homes of soldiers, where they are expected to be stored in safes provided by the army. The initiative is designed to ensure that the firearms are used under strict supervision, aiming to maintain order and safety within the communities.
The Israeli Army’s 96th Division, known as “Gilead,” is set to be the primary beneficiary of this arms distribution. This reserve unit, which was formed in 2024, is tasked with protecting local communities against potential threats similar to the cross-border infiltrations witnessed during previous conflicts. The division comprises volunteers aged between 40 and 60 and operates under the Israel Defense Forces’ Central Command, which oversees regions including the West Bank, Jerusalem, the Sharon plain, and the Gush Dan metropolitan area.
Col. Roi, the commander of Gilead, highlighted the unit’s role in providing rapid deployment capabilities. He stated in an interview that the division is not designed for hostage rescues but is meant to establish blockades, secure strategic locations, and respond swiftly to incidents. Following the events of October 7, Col. Roi emphasized the importance of preparedness, marking a shift in the mindset of citizen soldiers who may need to engage in immediate combat in defense of their communities.
As the initiative unfolds, hundreds of reserve soldiers have already begun receiving their rifles, with further deliveries expected as recruitment continues to grow, underscoring Israel’s commitment to bolstering domestic defense in the wake of recent experiences.
