Leonardo has unveiled its latest innovation, the Lionfish 30 naval turret, a cutting-edge AI-driven remotely operated weapon system that aligns with the modernization initiatives of the Italian Navy. This state-of-the-art turret is designed to enhance naval defense capabilities while showcasing advanced technology.
Central to the Lionfish 30 is the ITAR-free X-GUN, an electrically driven, dual-feed cannon designed to fire 30×173mm ammunition. The weapon system boasts a capacity of over 200 ready rounds, efficiently housed in two separate ammunition boxes. It is adaptable to a wide variety of 30mm munitions, including next-generation airburst rounds currently under development by KNDS, providing flexibility and increasing lethality in various combat scenarios.
Furthermore, the turret is equipped with the JANUS-D electro-optical director, a sophisticated system that incorporates a daylight camera, an infrared sensor, and a laser rangefinder. This advanced suite allows the turret to locate and identify targets at a remarkable range of up to 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), significantly enhancing situational awareness and targeting precision.
The introduction of the Lionfish 30 marks a pivotal step in naval warfare systems, emphasizing the integration of artificial intelligence and traditional firepower to elevate naval defense strategies. As global naval forces continue to adapt to modern threats, Leonardo’s latest offering positions the Italian Navy at the forefront of technological advancement in maritime capabilities.
