Kargil Bypass Bridge Renamed in Honor of Captain Anuj Nayyar

In a poignant ceremony, the Indian Army officially named the newly constructed Kargil Bypass Bridge as the ‘Captain Anuj Nayyar, Maha Vir Chakra Setu’. This tribute honors the bravery of Captain Anuj Nayyar and the soldiers of the 17 JAT Battalion, emphasizing the deep-rooted support from the local Kargil community.

Captain Nayyar, who was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra—the second-highest gallantry award in India—demonstrated extraordinary courage during Operation Vijay in 1999. His heroic actions contributed significantly to the capture of the Pimple Complex on the western slopes of Point 4875 in the Mushkoh Valley.

The ceremony drew a notable crowd, including Captain Nayyar’s mother, Meena Nayyar, and his younger brother, Karan Nayyar, alongside family guests, members of the 17 JAT Battalion, and local civil dignitaries. In a heartfelt moment, Meena and Karan Nayyar unveiled a commemorative plaque, marking this significant occasion.

During her emotional address, Meena Nayyar reflected on her son’s valiant spirit and expressed her profound gratitude that his legacy will forever be linked to the region where he made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation.

The newly named bridge is set to enhance connectivity by serving as a key bypass for Kargil town. It will improve traffic flow along the critical National Highway 1-D, which is essential for both civilian transportation and military logistics in the area, underscoring its importance in maintaining connectivity in a strategically significant region.
