Kratos Defense Partners with Korea Aerospace Industries to Develop Advanced Manned-Unmanned Teaming Capabilities

A significant strategic partnership has emerged between Kratos Defense & Security Solutions, a prominent US-based defense firm, and Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), aimed at co-developing advanced manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T) capabilities for future combat aircraft. This collaboration is set to enhance combat readiness and effectiveness for both US and allied forces through cutting-edge technology integration.

The joint effort will harness Kratos’ expertise in tactical drones, most notably the XQ-58A Valkyrie, alongside KAI’s established experience in crewed aerospace systems. The primary objective is to create a seamless integration of crewed and autonomous platforms, tailored to support a range of military operations including reconnaissance, strike, and electronic warfare missions.

By focusing on the development of scalable and interoperable technologies, the partnership plans to produce innovative solutions such as “loyal wingman” drones and distributed sensor systems. These advanced systems are envisioned to operate in coordination with manned aircraft, enhancing overall mission capability and situational awareness on the battlefield.

Steve Fendley, President of Kratos’ Unmanned Systems Division, expressed optimism about the collaboration, stating that both companies aim to “expand the boundaries of affordable mass and collaborative combat capabilities.” This statement underscores the intent to provide cost-effective yet sophisticated defense solutions that can adapt to rapidly changing warfare environments.

KAI’s ambitions extend beyond this partnership, as it seeks to strengthen its international defense collaborations. The company has made several strategic agreements recently to bolster its presence in the global defense market, focusing on aircraft production, training, and the integration of unmanned systems.

In a notable initiative earlier in October, KAI teamed up with LG Electronics to innovate advanced flight simulators that leverage artificial intelligence and virtual reality technologies for the Republic of Korea Air Force. Furthermore, in September, KAI announced a collaborative research project with Hanwha Systems, aimed at developing next-generation avionics and autonomous flight technologies for upcoming unmanned combat aerial vehicles.

Additionally, the year has seen KAI secure contracts to export its FA-50 light combat aircraft to nations such as Poland and Malaysia, reflecting the company’s growing influence and operational scope within the defense sector. This partnership with Kratos marks yet another strategic step in KAI’s quest to diversify and strengthen its technological footprint globally.
