L3Harris has officially completed the significant expansion of its space manufacturing facility located in Fort Wayne, Indiana. This move is part of a strategic effort to bolster the United States’ homeland missile defense capabilities. The recently upgraded facility spans 95,000 square feet (approximately 8,825 square meters) and represents a substantial investment of $125 million. The expansion is specifically designed to enhance the production of on-orbit technology that will support the country’s ambitious “Golden Dome” initiative, which is a constellation of advanced satellites and sensors tasked with the detection, tracking, and interception of missile threats.
On-orbit technology refers to the range of capabilities that enable ongoing maintenance, repairs, or upgrades to satellites and other space infrastructure while they are in orbit. This innovation is crucial as it extends the lifespan of these assets and enhances their resiliency, ensuring that the U.S. can effectively respond to emerging threats.
The expanded facility is also set to play a key role in engineering, integration, testing, and program management for L3Harris’ broader missile defense initiatives. Among its projects are the missile tracking satellites developed for the Missile Defense Agency’s Hypersonic and Ballistic Tracking Space Sensor program, as well as contributions to the Space Development Agency’s Tracking Layer program.
Ed Zoiss, president of Space and Airborne Systems at L3Harris, emphasized the importance of accelerating the nation’s missile warning and defense capabilities, stating that it is a priority for national security. He highlighted the facility’s ability to produce 48 payloads per year, ensuring that the company meets the scale and speed demanded by its defense customers, positioning them to adequately protect against threats to the homeland.
This investment comes at a pivotal time, timed for delivery during the latter part of U.S. President Donald Trump’s term. In addition to its defense-oriented capabilities, the facility will also support the production of satellites for global civil weather programs, showcasing a dual-purpose operational model.
Local leadership, including Rep. Marlin Stutzman, praised L3Harris’ commitment to Fort Wayne, noting that the new investments and construction represent a crucial step towards reinvigorating the nation’s defensive capabilities with products that are “Made in America” once again. This development is expected to not only boost national security but also create jobs and stimulate the local economy.
