Leonardo DRS Secures $7 Million Contract to Equip Royal Thai Army's Stryker Vehicles with Advanced Battle Management Systems

Leonardo DRS has secured a contract to supply advanced battle management systems for the Royal Thai Army’s Stryker 8×8 armored fighting vehicles, marking a significant step in enhancing the capabilities of Thailand’s military forces. Valued at over $7 million, this contract will enable the delivery of proprietary Command, Control, Communications, Computers, and Intelligence (C4I) hardware and software specifically designed for this fleet.

Under the terms of the agreement, Leonardo DRS will provide enhanced international versions of the battle management systems currently utilized in United States Army ground vehicles. The project entails several key tasks, including the configuration of robust cyber protection networks, comprehensive software installation, as well as operational training and sustainment aimed at ensuring the effective use of these new systems by the Southeast Asian military.

The integration of these battle management systems is anticipated to significantly bolster the Stryker fleet’s tactical operations and improve situational awareness on various terrains, including those that present challenges to injured troop recovery efforts. This capability enhancement comes at a time when modernizing military operations is critical in response to an increasingly complex global security environment.

Collaborating closely with local Thai industry partner Chaiseri Defense, Leonardo DRS aims to ensure that the Royal Thai Army receives not only advanced technology but also localized expertise and support. Bill Guyan, VP and General Manager of Leonardo DRS Land Electronics, emphasized the necessity for allied forces to be equipped with cutting-edge capabilities to effectively meet contemporary threats. He expressed pride in partnering with Chaiseri Defense to deliver proven capabilities and integration experience that will empower warfighters with essential tools for battlefield success.

The Stryker armored vehicle, developed by General Dynamics, weighs approximately 19 tons and is designed with a length of 22 feet (7 meters). It can accommodate up to nine passengers while offering protection through its bolt-on ceramic armor, capable of withstanding fire from 14.5×114 millimeter rounds. The vehicle is versatile in its armament, capable of being equipped with a grenade launcher or a tank gun, in addition to supporting various machine guns such as the 12.7-millimeter and 7.62-millimeter weapons.

Powering the Stryker is a robust 350-horsepower Caterpillar engine, allowing it to reach maximum speeds of 60 miles per hour (97 kilometers per hour) and covering distances up to 310 miles (499 kilometers). As the Royal Thai Army integrates these capabilities, it is poised to enhance its operational readiness and effectiveness in a rapidly evolving defense landscape.
