A significant enhancement to Italy’s missile defense capabilities is underway with the integration of a new drone-defense system into the Michelangelo Dome. This innovative solution is aimed at addressing potential vulnerabilities or “dead zones” within the broader missile shield being established.
The centerpiece of this initiative is Leonardo’s Hystrix 76 Anti-Drone System (ADS), which leverages a combat-proven naval gun initially designed for maritime applications. This 76/62mm gun has been repurposed for land-based operations to effectively confront a diverse array of aerial threats.
The Hystrix 76 ADS is equipped to fire various air-defense munitions, including the HE-PF-IM6-OES and HE-MOMA1 rounds, which feature selectable detonation settings. This flexibility allows for precise engagement of threats based on operational requirements. Furthermore, the system can deploy Vulcano 76 rounds, known for their programmable fuses, along with DART guided munitions to enhance targeting accuracy.
This development not only strengthens Italy’s defensive posture against aerial threats, but also signifies a broader trend in military technology, where land-based systems adapt naval innovations for enhanced operational efficiency. The integration of the Hystrix 76 ADS into the Michelangelo Dome stands as a testament to ongoing advancements in defense capabilities, particularly in the dynamic landscape of aerial warfare.
