Leonardo has marked a significant milestone with its debut in international operations at the Defence Cyber Marvel, a multinational exercise focused on digital security, which is spearheaded by the UK Ministry of Defence. This forward-thinking initiative aims to enhance the cyber capabilities of allied forces in response to evolving threats.
The company deployed a team of 11 apprentices hailing from its Cyber and Security division based in Bristol. They collaborated with professionals from the British Armyโs Royal Signals reserve unit to tackle the challenges presented during the event. The primary objective was to defend a diverse network that included Windows, Linux, and operational technology systems against a variety of cyber attack simulations, all conducted under Singaporeโs time zone, where the majority of the military and industry teams were positioned for the exercise.
Preparation for the event involved rigorous training by Leonardoโs full-time Security Operations Centre personnel, who ensured that the apprentices were adequately equipped to face the incoming challenges. Meanwhile, the Royal Signals personnel offered valuable mentorship throughout the duration of the exercise.
Team lead Oliver recounted the experience, noting the unconventional scheduling that required the team to commence their workday at 1 AM UK time. โWhile it was a struggle to adjust at first, the team quickly came together. The late-night sessions added to the realism and intensity of the exercise, showcasing the commitment and resilience of the apprentices,โ he stated.
Throughout the event, Leonardoโs specialists were tasked with analyzing real-time intelligence to inform their defensive strategies, reviewing indicators of compromise, strengthening their systems, and isolating potential threats. Oliver expressed pride in the experience, highlighting its value in developing the skills necessary for effective cyber defense. โAs apprentices, we’re always looking for new opportunities, and this was the perfect way for us to improve our blue team skills,โ he added.
The Defence Cyber Marvel, now in its fifth year, is an annual event that operates in collaboration with notable organizations, including the British National Crime Agency, the UK Cabinet Office, the Department of Business and Trade, and the Department of Work and Pensions. This yearโs competition, held in Singapore, attracted around 2,500 participants from 29 countries and involved 70 diverse organizations, all committed to strengthening their digital competencies to effectively counter real-world cyber threats.
