Lieutenant Deeksha Tripathi Becomes First Female Combatant to Complete AMAR Course at AIPT Pune

In a significant milestone for gender inclusion within the Indian Armed Forces, Lieutenant Deeksha Tripathi has made history as the first female combatant to successfully complete the Army Martial Arts Routine (AMAR) course at the Army Institute of Physical Training (AIPT) in Pune. This remarkable achievement was announced by the Fire and Fury Corps of the Indian Army, underscoring a pivotal moment in military training and role diversification.

Lieutenant Tripathi, currently serving with the Fire and Fury Corps in the strategically important Ladakh region, exemplifies exceptional physical endurance, mental resilience, and unwavering determination. The AMAR course is recognized as one of the most challenging combat training programs within the Indian Army, meticulously designed to prepare soldiers for intense close-quarters battle scenarios, which are essential in today’s complex operational environments.

The AMAR course was introduced in 2023 as a modern and standardized unarmed combat system. Its development aimed to enhance soldiers’ capabilities in hand-to-hand combat and unconventional warfare. By blending elements of traditional Indian martial arts with international close-combat techniques, AMAR replaced older unarmed combat drills, signifying a progressive shift in military training practices.

Participants in this rigorous course undergo extensive training that encompasses various combat skills, including bare-hand fighting techniques, weapon-based strategies, and defense mechanisms against sharp-edged and improvised weapons. Mental conditioning under extreme stress is also a critical component of the training. In addition, the course includes intensive endurance drills tailored for operations in extreme environments, such as high-altitude regions exceeding 14,000 feet along India’s northern borders.

Typically spanning several weeks, the training regimen subjects participants to physically demanding drills that evaluate stamina, reflexes, balance, situational awareness, and controlled aggression. Realistic battlefield simulations prepare soldiers for scenarios where they must neutralize threats without the aid of conventional weaponry.

Despite the program’s extreme physical and psychological challenges, Lieutenant Tripathi emerged victorious, completing the course with distinction. The Indian Army praised her for enduring its relentless demands and excelling through sheer grit and determination.

Lieutenant Tripathi’s achievement bears special significance given her assignment to the Fire and Fury Corps (XIV Corps), one of the Indian Army’s most operationally active formations tasked with protecting India’s strategic interests in the Ladakh sector. The region’s harsh climate, high altitude, and sensitive border deployments create particularly tough conditions for military personnel.

This groundbreaking success also reflects the Indian Army’s ongoing initiatives to bolster the role of women in military service. Over the past decade, there has been a notable increase in the induction of women officers into operational roles across various arms and services, reinforcing the growing emphasis on gender inclusivity within the armed forces.

Lieutenant Tripathi’s accomplishment is being celebrated as a source of inspiration for future generations of women officers to pursue advanced combat training and engage in high-intensity operational roles. Defense analysts emphasize that such achievements not only fortify gender inclusivity but also enhance the operational capabilities of the armed forces.

By successfully completing one of the most challenging combat training programs, Lieutenant Deeksha Tripathi has not only set a historic benchmark but also exemplified the resilience, professionalism, and dedication that the Indian Army embodies.
