Lieutenant General Dinesh Singh Rana Assumes Command as 18th Commander-in-Chief of Andaman and Nicobar Command

Lieutenant General Dinesh Singh Rana has officially taken command as the 18th Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman and Nicobar Command (CINCAN), becoming a pivotal figure in India’s integrated defense strategy. This notable event took place at the command’s headquarters in Port Blair, marking an important development in India’s defense posture in the strategically vital Indo-Pacific region.

Prior to this appointment, Lt Gen Rana led the Defence Intelligence Agency beginning in March 2023. His induction into this significant role commenced with a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at Bayonet Square, where he paid tribute to the sacrifices made by the armed forces. Following this, he conducted a review of a Joint Services Guard of Honour, emphasizing the operational synergy between the Army, Navy, and Air Force that is a hallmark of the command’s structure.

The Andaman and Nicobar Command, established in 2001, plays an essential role in protecting India’s interests in eastern maritime domains, particularly overseeing the strategically significant Strait of Malacca. With a coastline exceeding 2,000 kilometers, the command is responsible for vital assets such as Car Nicobar Air Force Station and naval vessels including INS Saryu and INS Sumedha, both of which have been stationed in Port Blair since 2013.

In addition to national defense, the ANC enhances international defense collaboration, particularly within the framework of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QUAD). The command has hosted joint training exercises and facilitated logistical agreements with allied nations such as Australia, Singapore, and the United States, further solidifying India’s strategic influence in the region.

Lt Gen Rana assumes command during a period characterized by escalating security concerns in the Indo-Pacific, notably the assertive posture of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA). His expertise in military intelligence is anticipated to bolster the command’s operational readiness and enhance its maritime surveillance capabilities.

Beyond its military obligations, the Andaman and Nicobar Command is also tasked with environmental stewardship, overseeing the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park, a biodiversity hotspot established in 1983. This responsibility underscores a dual mandate of national security alongside ecological preservation.

The change of command ceremony saw participation from senior officers across all three services, reinforcing the collaborative spirit that is integral to ANC’s operational ethos. As Lt Gen Rana begins his tenure, the Andaman and Nicobar Command is poised to further strengthen its role as a key player in India’s maritime strategy and overall defense framework in the Indo-Pacific region.
