Lok Sabha to Hold Special 16-Hour Debate on Pahalgam Terror Attack and Operation Sindoor

The Lok Sabha is preparing for a comprehensive 16-hour debate on July 28, centering on the recent Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor, as announced by Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju. The Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh, is set to kick off the discussion, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expected to contribute during the proceedings.

On July 29, the Rajya Sabha will follow suit with its own 16-hour debate, featuring participation from External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar. Modi’s involvement in this session may also depend on the dynamics of the ongoing discussions.

The decision for these debates comes after a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) led by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, which reached a consensus on the necessity of a full discussion addressing these crucial national security matters. Rijiju highlighted the government’s willingness to engage in dialogue since the beginning of the Monsoon Session, despite ongoing disruptions by the Opposition.

Key focus areas for the debate include the specifics of Operation Sindoor, along with various other pressing national concerns. A range of prominent leaders from the government and Opposition are expected to take part, including Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP MPs Nishikant Dubey and Anurag Thakur, and regional representatives like TDP’s Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu and GM Harish Balayogi. The Samajwadi Party will be represented by Akhilesh Yadav and Rajiv Rai.

The Opposition has been vocal in demanding clarity from the Prime Minister regarding Operation Sindoor as well as former U.S. President Donald Trump’s claims about mediating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. Modi’s anticipated participation is viewed as an opportunity to directly address these concerns in Parliament.

Expectations are high as the debates in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha are poised to tackle a broad spectrum of strategic, diplomatic, and internal security issues. This forthcoming session marks a critical juncture in the Monsoon Session, which has so far experienced limited legislative action due to frequent adjournments and protests from various Opposition factions.

With the Lok Sabha reconvening on July 28 and the Rajya Sabha the following day, political analysts are preparing for a week that is likely to be both emotionally charged and pivotal for legislative discourse in Parliament.
