Hyderabad-based Lokesh Machines Ltd has marked a significant achievement by unveiling India’s first indigenous 7.62x51mm belt-fed medium machine gun (MMG), developed in collaboration with the Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) located in Pune.

Following the successful launch of its ASMI 9x19mm submachine gun, Lokesh’s new MMG is designed to provide versatility with both single-shot and automatic firing modes. It is compatible with both Indian and NATO-standard ammunition and boasts an impressive effective range of 1,800 meters. The weapon can fire at a rate of 800 rounds per minute and supports a 250-round belt capacity, with the flexibility to link additional belts for extended combat engagements.

The MMG is engineered for multipurpose applications, allowing it to be mounted on ground vehicles, naval vessels, and even aircraft. It is constructed to operate efficiently in extreme temperatures ranging from -40°C to +55°C. Following rigorous testing by the Indian Army, Lokesh Machines has received an order worth ₹17.7 crore for precision components to enhance existing MMG systems, integrating the company’s lighter and more reliable subassemblies.

According to the company’s director, M. Srinivas, the new MMG is approximately 25% lighter than current models. This reduction in weight is attributed to its single-piece machined receiver, a chromium-plated barrel that enhances durability, a quick-change barrel system, and a three-position gas regulator that significantly improves operational efficiency.

This order represents another milestone for Lokesh Machines as it continues to broaden its influence in India’s defense manufacturing landscape, showcasing the country’s growing self-reliance in military equipment development.
