Lt Gen Sadhna S Nair Visits Base Hospital Delhi Cantt to Inaugurate Newly Renovated Facilities

In a significant advancement for the Army Medical Corps, Lt Gen Sadhna S Nair, the first woman to head the organization, visited the Base Hospital Delhi Cantt (BHDC) on June 2, 2025. Her presence underscored the Army’s commitment to enhancing healthcare infrastructure while also highlighting the increasing role of women in leadership positions within the military.

During her visit, Lt Gen Nair engaged with Maj Gen Amresh Ghai, Commandant of BHDC, who briefed her on the hospital’s vital operations and challenges faced by one of the Armed Forces Medical Services’ busiest facilities. BHDC is renowned for its advanced medical capabilities, catering not only to active service personnel but also to veterans and their families, positioning it as a critical component of military healthcare in the region.

A key highlight of the visit was the inauguration of the newly renovated Obstetrics and Gynecology wards, which have been renamed MAITREYI, translating to “The provider of life.” This renaming symbolizes the hospital’s commitment to enhancing maternal and women’s health services, a focus increasingly mirrored in civilian healthcare institutions.

Moreover, Lt Gen Nair unveiled new departmental insignias and mission statements, which aim to reflect the hospital’s dedication to professionalism and compassionate care. She also toured the hospital’s state-of-the-art Dialysis Centre, which plays a crucial role in meeting critical care needs.

Interacting with medical officers, Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs), and other staff members, Lt Gen Nair praised their steadfast commitment to delivering high-quality patient care. Her recognition resonates with her earlier observations made during a visit to the Base Hospital Lucknow earlier this year, where she acknowledged the innovation and dedication present within the Armed Forces Medical Services.

The visit not only emphasized the Indian Army’s focus on operational readiness but also the importance of medical advancement. Through ongoing modernization and a patient-centric approach, BHDC continues to uphold its legacy of excellence in serving the armed forces community.
