Magnet Defense Completes Acquisition of Metal Shark to Enhance AI-Enabled Maritime Security Capabilities

Magnet Defense has completed its acquisition of Metal Shark, marking a significant step towards enhancing maritime security through advanced technology. This merger combines Magnet Defense’s expertise in artificial intelligence with Metal Shark’s established US shipbuilding operations, particularly focused on unmanned vessel technology.

With this integration, Magnet Defense is poised to transition from prototype development to mass production of autonomous surface vessels intended for the US military and its allied forces. The newly merged entity aims to expedite the delivery of AI-driven maritime platforms, in alignment with the US Golden Fleet initiative and overarching national security objectives.

The demand for maritime security solutions is increasing at an unprecedented pace, yet the US shipbuilding capacity has not kept up with global standards. Magnet Defense plans to address this challenge by employing modular vessel designs, leveraging modern manufacturing techniques, and utilizing autonomous systems that require minimal onboard personnel.

Metal Shark brings a robust legacy to this partnership, having delivered over 2,000 vessels globally, including more than 500 to the US Navy and 600 to the US Coast Guard. This extensive portfolio includes contributions to law enforcement as well as military operations, creating a solid foundation for the rapid scaling of AI-enabled, mission-specific unmanned vessels.

From 2022 to 2025, Metal Shark secured numerous high-value contracts, providing patrol boats, interceptors, and support vessels to various clients. Notably, the company received a significant contract in 2024 under a US Navy Patrol Boat Flight 2 agreement, which could involve the construction of up to 73 patrol boats under a deal estimated to be worth approximately $290 million for both navy and Department of Homeland Security use. Furthermore, Metal Shark has supplied patrol boats to allied nations through US government-funded foreign military sales programs.

In addition to manned vessels, Metal Shark has been developing unmanned surface vessel concepts that leverage their existing hull designs. In April 2025, the company introduced a prototype of its High-Speed Maneuverable Unmanned Surface Vessel, reflecting its commitment to innovation in maritime technology.

The merger of Magnet Defense and Metal Shark signals a pivotal shift in the US maritime landscape, aiming to enhance operational capabilities and address emerging security challenges effectively.
