Major Anuj Sood, who was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra, epitomizes bravery, leadership, and selfless service in the Indian Army. Serving as a Company Commander in the 21st Battalion of the Rashtriya Rifles, he made the ultimate sacrifice on May 2, 2020, during a fierce counter-insurgency operation in Handwara, located in the Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir. In a display of unparalleled courage, Major Sood entered a house occupied by terrorists in an effort to rescue civilians who were being held hostage, ultimately paying with his life in the line of duty.
Born on December 17, 1989, at the Air Force Command Hospital in Bengaluru, Karnataka, Major Sood grew up in a military family hailing from Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh, before settling in Chandigarh. His father, Brigadier Chandrakant Sood (Retired), served in the Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers, and his mother, the late Smt. Ragini Sood, instilled in him the values of discipline and patriotism. This upbringing ignited his aspiration to serve in the armed forces, leading him to become a dedicated young man firmly focused on his goal.
In his personal life, Major Sood is survived by his father, wife Aakriti Singh Sood, elder sister Shruti, and niece Meera. A graduate of Army Public School, Udhampur, and Punjab Public School, Nabha, he joined the National Defence Academy (NDA) in 2008. At the NDA, he stood out as a disciplined and capable cadet, participating diligently in various activities, including paragliding and equestrian training. He earned the title of “torch holder,” denoting excellence among his peers.
Continuing his military journey, he was commissioned into the Brigade of Guards on June 9, 2012, after further training at the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun, where he graduated as the Senior Under Officer. He later completed an M.Tech degree from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, showcasing his commitment to intellectual growth alongside his military career.
Major Sood’s military tenure began with the 19th Battalion of the Brigade of Guards, where he held various key positions, including Platoon Commander and Adjutant. He further honed his skills by completing the prestigious Junior Command Course at the Army War College in Mhow. His service was marked by organizational efficiency and a unique ability to lead under pressure, traits that earned him the respect of his colleagues and superiors who affectionately referred to him as a “scholar-soldier.”
In March 2018, Major Sood was deputed to the 21st Battalion of the Rashtriya Rifles, tasked with counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir. His aptitude for leadership shone brightly in a conflict-ridden environment where he consistently led his troops with valor and precision.
On the fateful day of May 1, 2020, Major Sood’s unit received intelligence regarding the presence of terrorists within a civilian house in Chanjimula village, which had resulted in hostages being taken. The situation required immediate intervention, and Major Sood took critical charge of the operation. Establishing a tight cordon around the area with his Combat Action Team, he opted to lead the entry team personally into the house, accompanied by his Commanding Officer and fellow soldiers.
The operation developed into a harrowing close-quarters battle. Despite encountering heavy fire and sustaining injuries, Major Sood remained steadfast, directly engaging the terrorists to ensure the safe evacuation of trapped civilians. Tragically, in the ensuing combat, Major Sood along with four of his brave comrades made the ultimate sacrifice. Their actions not only neutralized the terrorist threat but also saved innocent lives.
In recognition of his extraordinary bravery, Major Sood was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra on January 26, 2021. The official citation underscored his fearless leadership and selfless dedication to duty. The award was presented to his wife, Aakriti Singh Sood, as a tribute to his gallant actions and sacrifice.
Married in 2017 to Aakriti Singh Sood, a software engineer and daughter of a Navy Marine Commando, Major Sood shared a life rooted in mutual respect and understanding shaped by military challenges. Beyond his professional achievements, he was known for his humility, zest for life, and passion for biking.
Major Anuj Sood’s life remains an inspiration to his fellow soldiers and to countless young Indians aspiring to serve the nation. To honor his memory, his coursemates at the NDA established the Major Anuj Sood Trophy and dedicated a flank in his name.
His legacy serves as a poignant reminder of the values of courage, honor, and selfless service that define the Indian Army. At just 30, he demonstrated that true leadership often entails placing the safety of others above one’s own life.
