In a dignified ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, President Droupadi Murmu honored Major Ashish Dahiya of the Corps of Engineers with the Shaurya Chakra, recognizing his exceptional bravery, leadership, and tactical skill during multiple counter-terror operations in Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir. The Shaurya Chakra is India’s third-highest peacetime gallantry award, bestowed for valorous actions in non-combat zones, particularly in the realms of anti-terrorism and counter-insurgency.
Major Dahiya has been serving with the Rashtriya Rifles since June 2022 and has taken a leading role in at least five high-risk operations, resulting in the elimination of four hardcore terrorists and the neutralization of three Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). His actions played a vital role in securing operational success and ensuring troop safety in one of the country’s most troubled regions.
Among his notable missions was one that took place on June 2, 2024, in a densely populated section of Pulwama, where intelligence revealed that heavily armed militants were preparing to execute a significant attack. While Major Dahiya led the cordon and search operation, the terrorists launched an intense assault utilizing small arms and grenades. During the encounter, a grenade explosion wounded one of Major Dahiya’s comrades. Demonstrating remarkable bravery, he navigated under heavy enemy fire to reach the wounded soldier, providing first aid and facilitating a safe evacuation to prevent additional casualties.
In a decisive moment of the operation, Major Dahiya engaged one of the retreating militants in close-quarter combat, successfully neutralizing a high-profile terrorist responsible for several attacks across South Kashmir. This pivotal action not only shifted the dynamics of the encounter but also underscored the operation’s overall success.
These commendable efforts were part of a wider initiative by the 50 Rashtriya Rifles, a specialized battalion formed for counter-insurgency operations. Established in 1990, the Rashtriya Rifles comprises over 65 battalions and operates under the Ministry of Defence, drawing personnel from various army regiments. The unit is renowned for its deep local intelligence networks and specialized training, playing an essential role in diminishing militancy and stabilizing volatile regions, particularly within the Kashmir Valley.
The 50 RR, to which Major Dahiya is assigned, boasts a distinguished operational history, successfully conducting high-precision missions in the Pulwama-Anantnag area, known for intense insurgent activity. The unit’s operational philosophy emphasizes conducting “Surgical Strikes with Surgical Precision,” with an aim to disrupt terrorist networks while minimizing collateral damage.
In addition to frontline engagements, Major Dahiya has significantly contributed to the detection and neutralization of concealed IEDs during route-clearance patrols, preventing potential loss of life among both soldiers and civilians. His exemplary leadership and unwavering commitment to mission objectives have earned him respect across all ranks.
Earlier this year, the Gallantry Awards 2025 were announced, honoring a total of 93 personnel for their exceptional service, including 14 Shaurya Chakras. Major Dahiya’s name was particularly notable, reflecting not just his audacity but also the consistent valor he displayed across various operations amid challenging terrains and hostile conditions.
The investiture ceremony, attended by senior military leaders and dignitaries, served as a poignant reminder of the daily sacrifices and heroism exhibited by India’s armed forces. During the ceremony, President Murmu lauded the bravery of all awardees, emphasizing the nation’s profound respect and gratitude for those on the frontlines of national security.
Major Ashish Dahiya’s recognition enhances the esteemed legacy of the Rashtriya Rifles and the Indian Army. His actions epitomize the critical characteristics of initiative, tactical awareness, and personal courage essential in today’s asymmetric warfare landscape. As India continues to confront terrorism and insurgency in sensitive regions, leaders like Major Dahiya exemplify the indomitable spirit and professionalism of its armed forces.
