Maj Gen Ajay Feroze Shah Taking Over the Baton

Major General Ajay Feroze Shah officially took over as the Chief of Staff of the Andaman and Nicobar Command on January 7, 2026, following a formal handover from his predecessor, Biplab Hota, VSM. This leadership transition is poised to maintain the focus on strengthening operational effectiveness in one of India’s most strategically important military theaters.

A distinguished alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Major General Shah brings a wealth of operational experience and significant exposure to joint and integrated military operations. His extensive professional background includes a range of key command and staff positions, which positions him well to enhance the capabilities of the Andaman and Nicobar Command, India’s only tri-service theatre command.

The Andaman & Nicobar Command is tasked with safeguarding India’s strategic interests in the eastern Indian Ocean Region. Major General Shah’s appointment comes at a time when the command is increasingly vital for overseeing joint operations involving the Army, Navy, and Air Force. His leadership is expected to emphasize the importance of inter-service coordination, ensuring operational readiness and enhancing the overall effectiveness of the command.

This new chapter represents a continuity in leadership, with an emphasis on enhancing jointness, responsiveness, and mission preparedness in a maritime domain that carries significant strategic implications for India. Major General Shah’s appointment is anticipated to reinforce critical defense initiatives and strengthen the collaborative efforts of the tri-services in the region.
