In a significant ceremony held at the New Military Station in Prayagraj, Major General Amit Singh Sohal, a recipient of the Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM), officially took over the responsibilities as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Purva Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh Sub Area.
Commissioned in December 1990 and an alumnus of the Corps of Engineers, Major General Sohal has compiled an impressive resume during his distinguished career, showcasing his leadership skills across both the South Western and Eastern theatres. Notably, he has enhanced his expertise through service on a United Nations mission in Lebanon, bringing valuable international experience to his role.
During the ceremonial parade, Major General Sohal addressed the troops, stressing the importance of professionalism, integrity, and dedication as the cornerstone values for the formation he now leads. His leadership is anticipated to play a crucial role in bolstering operational readiness, enhancing administrative capabilities, and prioritizing veteran welfare in a region of strategic significance.
The Corps of Engineers, known as one of the oldest branches of the Indian Army, has a rich legacy of providing combat support and engineering excellence. Major General Sohal’s recent appointment further cements Prayagraj’s status as a vital military hub within the country.
Earlier this year, Prayagraj also hosted the Northern Command Investiture Ceremony in March 2024, where numerous soldiers were honored for acts of gallantry and distinguished service. This event underscored the region’s ongoing commitment to India’s defense infrastructure, showcasing the pivotal role Prayagraj plays in the country’s military landscape.
