Melania Trump Chairs UN Security Council Meeting Amid Ongoing US-Israeli War Against Iran

First Lady Melania Trump led a United Nations Security Council meeting focused on the plight of children affected by conflict, coinciding with ongoing tensions related to the US-Israel war against Iran. Representing the United States, which recently assumed the presidency of the Security Council for March, Trump commenced the meeting by striking a ceremonial gavel and expressed gratitude to Britain for its prior presidency.

Speaking to a packed chamber, Trump honored American service members killed in the conflict, stating, โ€œTo the families who have lost their heroes who sacrifice their lives for freedom, their bravery and dedication will always be remembered.โ€ She highlighted the importance of knowledge and understanding for achieving lasting peace in global societies, asserting that societies governed by wisdom tend to be more peaceful.

Iran’s ambassador to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, criticized the timing of the US-led meeting, deeming it shameful and hypocritical amidst the ongoing conflict. In response, Trump emphasized the United States’ commitment to children worldwide, expressing hope for peace without directly referencing the hostilities in the Middle East.

Despite the controversial backdrop, Trump received a warm reception from Security Council ambassadors. The Greek representative expressed gratitude while the French envoy compared her to the notable humanitarian Eleanor Roosevelt. Russia, typically critical of the U.S., also offered polite praise, notably avoiding any mentions of Iran, an issue highlighted only by Bahrain.

During the two-hour session, Trump concluded with a call for strength and resolve in the pursuit of global peace and security. This marked a historic moment, as it was the first instance of a First Lady presiding over a Security Council meeting, according to UN Secretary-General spokesperson Stephane Dujarric.

Melania Trump has previously engaged in diplomatic efforts, particularly focused on the release of Ukrainian children taken by Russian forces. Rosemary DiCarlo, UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, acknowledged her efforts in bringing attention to children affected by conflict, notably Ukrainian children separated from their families.

Amid increasing political and financial tensions between the United States and the UN, observers have noted the U.S. President’s intention to bypass the Security Council through a newly established โ€œBoard of Peace,โ€ which recently held its first session in Washington. This initiative saw several countries pledging support towards the rebuilding of Gaza.

In her statements, Trump reiterated a critical stance towards the UN, suggesting it has not fulfilled its mission. The U.S. has seen strained relations with various UN agencies under the current administration, has reduced its financial contributions, and is currently in debt to the organization for around $4 billion in outstanding payments related to both the regular and peacekeeping budgets, a situation that has raised concerns about the UN’s financial stability as warned by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
