General Points that a Candidate should keep in check about his/her own physics:

The candidate must be in good physical and mental health and free from any defect likely to interfere with the efficient performance of duties both ashore and afloat under peace as well as war conditions in any part of the world. During the inspection of candidates the following principal points are to be ensured :-

(a) The hearing is good and that there is no sign of any disease of ear, nose or throat.

(b) Vision in either eye is up to the required standard. His/her eyes are bright, clear and with no obvious squint or abnormality. Movements of eye balls should be full and free in all directions.

(c) Speech is without impediment.

(d) There is no glandular swelling.

(e) Chest is well formed and that his/her heart and lungs are sound.

(f) Limbs of the candidates are well formed and fully developed.

(g) There is free and perfect action of all the joints.

(h) There is no evidence of hernia of any degree or form.

(j) Feet and toes are well formed.

Minimum Physical Standards for Indian Army IMA

Minimum height required to join Indian army for a male candidate as an officer is 152 cms and minimum height required to join Indian army for a female candidate as an officer is 150 cms. There is no maximum height as such, but the maximum height given in the official notification of Indian army is 195 cms.

Visual Standards :

(i) The minimum acceptable visual acuity are : Distant Vision (corrected) better eye 6/6, worse eye 6/18, myopia of not more than minus 3.50 including astigmatism.

(ii) Candidates who have under-gone or have the evidence of having undergone Radial Keratotomy to improve the visual acuity, will be permanently rejected; aslo candidates who have undergone Lasik Surgery for correction of refractive error are NOT acceptable.

Minimum Physical Standards for Indian Air Force AFA

Flying Branch:

  • Height and Weight: Minimum height : 162.5 cms with correlated weight, Leg Length : Min – 99 cms. Max – 120 cms.Thigh Length : Max – 64 cms.Sitting Height : Min – 81.5 cms. Max – 96 cms.
  • Vision:
  1. Minimum Visual Acuity 6/6 in one eye and 6/9 in other, correctable to 6/6 only for hypermetropia.
  2. Manifest Myopia – Nil.
  3. LASIK Surgery for correction of vision is admissible in Transport and Helicopter streams of Short Service Commission (Flying Branch) if the following conditions are fulfilled at the time of Air Force medical examination:-

(i) LASIK Surgery should not have been carried out before the age of 20 years.

(ii) The axial length of the eye should not be more than 25.5 mm as measured by IOL master.

(iii) At least twelve months should have lapsed post uncomplicated stable LASIK. No history or evidence of any complication.

(iv) The post LASIK corneal thickness as measured by a corneal pachymeter should not be less than 450 microns.

(v) Individuals with high refractive errors (>6D) prior to LASIK are to be excluded. Candidates must not suffer from colour or night blindness.

  • All other medical criteria would be evaluated by the Air Force Medical Authorities whose decision on the fitness would be final.

Technical Branch:

  • Height and Weight: Minimum height, Men – 157.5 Cms, Women – 152 Cms with correlated weight.
  • All other medical criteria would be evaluated by the Air Force Medical Authorities whose decision on the fitness would be final.

Ground Duty Branch:

  • Height and Weight: Minimum height, Men – 157.5 Cms, Women – 152 Cms with correlated weight.
  • All other medical criteria would be evaluated by the Air Force Medical Authorities whose decision on the fitness would be final.
