In a recent address to the Lok Sabha, Prime Minister Narendra Modi provided a robust defense of India’s military operations during Operation Sindoor, specifically responding to critiques following the Pahalgam terror attack. He affirmed that no international leaders urged India to halt its military retaliation against Pakistan, highlighting that the latter ultimately requested a ceasefire after enduring substantial losses in the missile exchanges on May 9 and 10.
During the debate on the recent violence, Modi emphasized the non-escalatory nature of India’s actions, asserting, “From day one, we made it clear that our retaliation was measured.” He recounted an episode involving U.S. Vice President JD Vance, mentioning that he was engaged in discussions with the armed forces at the time of Vance’s attempts to reach him. Modi stated that he later conveyed a strong message: “If Pakistan attacked, it would pay a heavy price.”
The Prime Minister did not shy away from criticizing Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, who questioned the government’s response to claims made by former U.S. President Donald Trump regarding potential mediation for a ceasefire. Modi maintained that Pakistan had been acutely aware of the severe repercussions following its aggression, stating, “This time, Pakistan realized that our response will always be greater than their actions.” He reiterated that Operation Sindoor was ongoing and warned that India would respond decisively to any further provocations.
Highlighting the context of the military actions, Modi claimed that India accomplished its primary objective of neutralizing terrorist infrastructures on May 7. However, he indicated that the situation escalated due to Pakistan’s defense of these camps. As a result, intense missile strikes were launched by India across various locations in Pakistan, which he asserted left their military compromised.
He recounted a pivotal moment when Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) contacted his Indian counterpart, pleading for a cessation of hostilities. Modi quoted this communication: “Bas karo, bahut maara, ab zyada maar jhelne ki taakat nahin hai. Please hamla rok do,” which translates to an urgent plea for an end to the bombardment.
In closing, Modi remarked that this exchange has fundamentally altered Pakistan’s perception of India’s military resolve and its strategic posture. He stated that this moment has not only garnered attention from India but has also been noted by the international community, reinforcing India’s position on the global stage.
