Monthly Current Affairs October 2024

National Unity Day

  • Every year on October 31st India celebrates the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel as National Unity Day, also known as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas. Patel, fondly remembered as the “Iron Man of India,” played a crucial role in uniting India post-independence.
  • History of National Unity Day dates back to 2014 when the government decided to dedicate a day to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. He was instrumental in the integration of princely states into the Indian Union after independence in 1947.

  • Before his efforts, India was a fragmented nation, with over 565 princely states that enjoyed semi-autonomous status. Patel’s diplomatic skills and determination helped to merge these states into one united country, laying the foundation of modern India.
  • In recognition of his contribution, Rashtriya Ekta Diwas was established to educate future generations about his work and to celebrate his vision of a united India.
  • Since then, every 31st October has been observed as National Unity Day to pay homage to his legacy. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, also known as the “Iron Man of India,” was a key leader in India’s struggle for independence.

‘Cruise Bharat Mission’

  • Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal launched the ‘Cruise Bharat Mission’ from the Mumbai port.
  • Union Minister of State, Shantanu Thakur also attended the launch. The Cruise Bharat Mission aims to excel in India’s vision to become a global hub for cruise tourism and promote the country as the leading global cruise destination.

  •  Mr Sonowal said that the mission aims to propel the country’s cruise tourism industry by doubling cruise passenger traffic by 2029. He further said that the government is committed to harnessing the tremendous potential of the Blue Economy of India.
  • Mr Shantanu Thakur said that the Cruise Bharat is a visionary initiative that will open new horizons, create unprecedented opportunities, and place India at the forefront of the global cruise tourism industry.
  • Several Memorandum of Understanding relating to the tourism sector were also signed at the event.

Dada Saheb Phalke award

  • Legendary Actor Mithun Chakraborty will be honoured with Dadasaheb Phalke Award at the 70th National Film Awards ceremony next month. Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, from the streets of Kolkata to Cinematic Heights, Mithun Da’s remarkable cinematic journey inspires generations.
  • Dadasaheb Phalke Selection Jury decided for this top award in Indian cinema for Mr Chakraborty for his iconic contribution to Indian Cinema.
  • Mr Vaishnaw congratulated Mr Chakraborty saying his life is combination of struggle and achievement.

“Rajyamata-Gomata”

  • Maharashtra government granted the status of Rajyamata-Gomata to desi cows in the state. This is the first time that such a title has been bestowed on any creature. In a government resolution (GR) passed by the dairy development department, the state specified that the status of Rajyamata will be extended only to desi cows.

  • Importance of Cows : The government’s official declaration emphasizes the cow’s profound spiritual, scientific, and historical importance, reiterating the role these animals have played in India’s cultural and agricultural heritage for centuries.
  • To address the declining numbers : This move, outlined in a government order, also seeks to address concerns over the declining population of indigenous cow breeds.
  • Prioritize the preservation : The state government stressed the need for cattle rearers to prioritize the breeding and preservation of native species, given their socio-economic importance and religious significance.

India & Jamaica

  • India and Jamaica exchanged four Memorandum of Understanding in the fields of  Digital Public Infrastructure, Cultural Exchange and Sports.
  • These MoUs were exchanged after delegation-level talks held between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his visiting Jamaican counterpart Dr Andrew Holness in New Delhi.

  • Prime Minister Modi said that India accords special importance to the visit of the Prime Minister of Jamaica as for the first time Dr. Holness has come on a bilateral visit to India.
  • Mr Modi added that India and Jamaica relations are based on our shared history,  democratic values and strong people-to-people ties.
  • Prime Minister Modi further stated that India is ready to share its experience with Jamaica in areas such as Digital Public Infrastructure, small-scale industries, biofuel, innovation, health, education and agriculture. He added that India will move forward on the training and capacity building of the Jamaican Army in the field of defence.
  • Government of India has decided to name the road in front of the Jamaica High Commission in New Delhi as ‘Jamaica Marg’. Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted during the talks that the India-Jamaica relationship is defined by four Cs- culture, cricket, Commonwealth and Caribbean.

NATO Secretary-General

  • Former Netherlands Prime Minister Mark Rutte took over as the Secretary-General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) in Brussels.
  • He succeeds Norway’s Jens Stoltenberg, who had led the alliance since 2014. In his first press conference as Secretary-General, Rutte called on allies to significantly increase defence spending to meet NATO’s challenges.
  • He also urged the alliance to enhance cooperation with Indo-Pacific partners.

Jal Saheli’ Volunteers

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned the water volunteers called ‘jal saheli’ of Jhansi district whose efforts transformed the river Ghurari of Babina area in the district.
  • Women of the group from Simrawari village of Jhansi district said that earlier the water got wasted because there was no check dam.
  • People also used to witness the scarcity of drinking water in summers. After which they decided to work collectively for the rejuvenation of the river.

Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan

  • Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi launched the Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan (DAJGUA), on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, from Hazaribagh, Jharkhand.
  • The scheme has a total outlay of Rs.79,156 crores (Central Share: Rs.56,333 crore and State Share: Rs. 22,823 crore).

  • Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan envisions saturation of critical gaps in social infrastructure, health, education, livelihood, through 25 interventions implemented by 17-line ministries of Govt of India by convergence and outreach; and ensures holistic and sustainable development of tribal areas and communities. 
  • Prime Minister also inaugurated 40 Eklavya schools and laid the foundation stone of 25 new EMRSs amounting to around Rs 2,834 cr.

Israel Bans UN Secretary-General

  • Israel’s Foreign Minister Israel Katz has announced that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is prohibited from entering the country.
  • This decision comes in the wake of recent tensions between Israel and Iran. On Wednesday, Israel officially declared UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres “persona non grata,” citing what they perceive as a lack of explicit condemnation of Iran’s recent missile attack on Israel.
  • Foreign Minister Katz stated, “Those who cannot unequivocally condemn the attack on Israel by Iran do not have the right to visit our country.” He further criticized Guterres, accusing him of supporting various groups that Israel considers hostile.

  • The Foreign Minister went on to claim that Guterres’s actions and statements would be viewed negatively in the historical context of the United Nations.
  • This decision follows Iran’s missile strike against Israel on Tuesday night. In response to the attack, Guterres issued a statement expressing concern about the “widening conflict in the Middle East” and criticized the pattern of “escalation after escalation” in the region.
  • The move by Israel marks a significant escalation in diplomatic tensions between the country and the United Nations, potentially complicating international efforts to address ongoing conflicts in the region.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

World Green Economy Forum

  • World Green Economy Forum was launched in Dubai, bringing together global leaders and experts to address pressing environmental challenges.
  • Under the patronage of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, the forum’s theme, “Empowering Global Action: Unlocking Opportunities and Advancing Progress,” set the stage for discussions on international cooperation and innovative solutions for climate change and sustainability.

  • First plenary focused on international cooperation for climate mitigation, where Luma Saqqaf, Director for the Middle East, Africa, and India at the Principles for Responsible Investment, stressed the importance of integrated approaches to achieving sustainable development goals.
  • A key session titled “Decarbonising Energy-Intensive and Hard-to-Abate Industries” explored strategies to reduce carbon emissions in heavy transport, construction, energy, and chemicals sectors.
  • Another session, “4Ps: Adding Another ‘P’ to PPP (Public-Private Partnerships + Philanthropists),” highlighted the importance of collaboration between philanthropists and the public and private sectors to drive effective climate solutions.

  • The potential applications of artificial intelligence in fostering a sustainable future were discussed in the session “How Can We Use AI to Help Create a Sustainable Future?”.
  • A highlight of the forum was a panel discussion on aviation and the green economy, which examined the future of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Panelists discussed the ambitious goal of scaling up SAF production from the current 200,000 tonnes to 300 million tonnes by 2050. They also explored various CO2 sources for SAF production and emphasized the importance of stakeholder collaboration and capital investment.
  • The UAE government’s target of 1% SAF use by 2031 was noted as a key driver for change in the region. The forum also emphasized the critical role of youth in shaping a sustainable future, recognizing their importance in driving long-term environmental progress.

India – 3rd Largest Ethanol Producer & Consumer

  • India has recently become the third-largest producer and consumer of ethanol in the world. This change is thanks to important policy changes made by the Indian government to encourage the use of biofuels and improve energy sustainability.
  • The government has launched several programs to increase ethanol production, including financial support for sugarcane farmers and manufacturers. These policies aim to make more ethanol available for blending with fuels, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and support farmers in rural areas.

  • In September 2024, the India Sugar & Bio-Energy Conference was held, organized by the Indian Sugar & Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA). This event gathered policymakers, industry leaders, and other stakeholders to talk about the future of the sugar and bio-energy sectors.

  • This year’s conference theme, “Harmonising Sweet Sustainability: Navigating India’s Path to a Green Economy,” focuses on developing sustainable practices in the sugar and bio-energy industries. It aims to encourage teamwork and innovation in finding eco-friendly solutions.
  • Through discussions at the conference and government policies, participants hope to find new growth opportunities in ethanol production, improve supply chains, and promote sustainable farming practices that fit with India’s green economy goals.

Kho Kho World Cup

  • Kho Kho Federation of India (KKFI) and the International Kho Kho Federation have announced that the inaugural Kho Kho World Cup will take place in India in 2025.
  • The event will witness the participation of 24 countries from 6 continents and will feature 16 men’s and as many as women’s teams. Ahead of the World Cup, the KKFI plans to take the sport to 200 schools across 10 cities to promote the sport.

  • The federation will also run a membership drive for the school students with the aim of registering at least 50 lakh players ahead of the mega tournament. The tournament will feature a week-long series of matches, with top-tier athletes from across the globe.
  • Kho Kho World Cup aims to elevate this indigenous Indian sport to an international stage. Kho Kho has its roots in India, and the World Cup will highlight the rich cultural heritage and competitive spirit of the sport. The sport that started in the mud and now gone to the mat has a global presence with 54 countries playing the sport across the world.

New Classical Languages

  • Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved to confer the status of classical language to Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, Assamese, and Bengali languages.
  • The classical languages serve as a custodian of India’s ancient cultural heritage, embodying the essence of each community’s historical and cultural milestone.

  • The government had decided to create a new category of languages as “classical languages” on October 12, 2004, declaring Tamil as a classical language.
  • Among the criteria for the status of classical language are the high antiquity of its early texts, recorded history over a thousand years, and a body of ancient literature.
  • The literary tradition of the language must be original and not borrowed from another speech community. The inclusion of languages as classical languages will create significant employment opportunities, particularly in academic and research fields. The preservation, documentation, and digitisation of ancient texts in these languages will generate jobs in archiving, translation, publishing, and digital media.

National Mission On Edible Oils

  • The government has also approved the National Mission on Edible Oils and Oilseeds (NMEO-Oilseeds) for 2024-25 to 2030-31 with an outlay of 10 thousand 103 crore rupees.
  • This has been done with an aim to make India self-reliant in oilseed production in the next seven years.

  • Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the newly approved NMEO-Oilseeds will focus on enhancing the production of key primary oilseed crops such as rapeseed mustard, groundnut, soybean, sunflower, and sesamum.
  • He added that it will also focus on increasing collection and extraction efficiency from secondary sources like cottonseed, rice bran, and tree-butter oils. Mr Vaishnaw said that the mission aims to increase primary oilseed production from 39 million metric tonnes in 2022–23 to 69.7 million metric tonnes by –31.
  • He said that together with NMEO-OP (Oil Palm), the mission targets to increase domestic edible oil production to 25.45 million metric tonnes by 2030–31, meeting around 72% of the projected domestic requirement. Mr Vaishnaw said that the mission will harness the ongoing development of high-quality seeds by using cutting-edge global technologies such as genome editing.
  • Mission aims to significantly enhance domestic oilseed production, advancing the goal of self-reliance in edible oils, thereby reducing import dependency and conserving valuable foreign exchange while boosting farmers’ incomes.
  • This mission will also accrue significant environmental benefits in the form of low water usage, improved soil health, and making productive use of crop fallow areas.

International Energy Efficiency Hub

  • Union Cabinet has approved the signing of a letter of intent enabling India to join the International Energy Efficiency Hub. It is a global platform dedicated to fostering collaboration and promoting energy efficiency worldwide.
  • This move solidifies India’s commitment to sustainable development and aligns with its efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. By joining the Hub, India is taking a significant step towards a more sustainable future.

  • The country’s participation in this global platform will help accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy and improve energy security.
  • Briefing media after the meeting, Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw said that this decision will help India gain access to an exclusive 16-nation group sharing strategic energy practices and innovative solutions.
  • He added that as a member of the Hub, India will benefit from opportunities for collaboration with other member states, sharing its own expertise and learning from international best practices. Mr. Vaishnaw said that the country will also contribute to global efforts to address climate change by promoting energy-efficient technologies and practices.
  • As of July 2024, sixteen countries, including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, the United States, and the United Kingdom, have joined the Hub.

SCO Summit in Islamabad

  • External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar will lead the Indian delegation to Islamabad for the  SCO Summit to be held in 15th and 16th October. Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed this at a media briefing in Delhi this afternoon.
  • On Zakir Naik’s visit to Pakistan, Mr Jaiswal said India is not surprised that a fugitive from Indian justice has received a high level welcome in Pakistan. He termed it as disappointing and condemnable.

Nepal To Sell 40 MW Electricity To Bangladesh

  • Nepal, India and Bangladesh signed a tripartite agreement allowing Nepal to sell 40 MW of electricity to Bangladesh using the land and infrastructure of India. Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) and NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam (NVVN) signed the agreement in Kathmandu yesterday.
  • Earlier,  in December 2023, Bangladesh had approved a proposal for a 40 MW electricity purchase from Nepal and the final inking of the agreement was delayed due to the toppling of Sheikh Hasina’s government in Bangladesh.  
  • According to the NEA, electricity generated from 25 MW Trishuli and 22 MW Chilime hydroelectricity projects will be exported to Bangladesh at the rate of 6.40 US cents.

  • This agreement may facilitate about Rs. 1.22 billion earning annually for Nepal by exporting power to Bangladesh.
  • The meter of the energy export will be in Muzaffarpur, India, and the losses up to that point would be borne by the NEA while losses from Mujaffarpur to the Bangladesh border would be the responsibility of the Bangladeshi company.
  • The tripartite power deal is a milestone in Nepal’s energy sector since Nepal’s hydroelectricity is being exported to the third country for the first time in Nepal’s history.
  • The signing of the MoU between Nepal and Bangladesh in 2018 and the continuous efforts afterwards.  Ambassador of India to Nepal Navin Shrivastav emphasized that this is a landmark agreement marking a significant step forward in promoting regional cooperation in power trade and also reflects India’s commitment to deepening cross-border connectivity in South Asia.
  • NEA has set a target of exporting 10000 MW of electricity to India and 5000 MW to Bangladesh.

India Rejects USCIRF Report

  • India has rejected the report by the US Commission on International Religious Freedom report, terming it as malicious.
  • The report by the US federal government commission alleged worsening of religious freedom in India and called for it to be designated as a “Country of Particular Concern”.

  • In response to media queries regarding Country Update on India in the USCIRF report, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal called USCIRF a biased organization with a political agenda which continues to misrepresent facts and peddles a motivated narrative about India.
  • The spokesperson urged USCIRF to desist from such agenda-driven efforts and utilise its time more productively on addressing human rights issues in the United States.

‘Vatavaran’

  • International Film Festival and Forum on Environment and Wildlife, Vatavaran Was inaugurated.
  • The theme for the three-day film festival is “Wetlands for Life”, focusing on the awareness and conservation of the wetlands eco-system.

  • Director General of Forest in the Ministry of Environment, Jitendra Kumar highlighted that wetlands are very important to India due to their ecological and economic benefits.
  • He added that around 6 per cent of Indians are directly dependent on Wetlands for livelihood, which makes their conservation even more vital.
  • Mr Kumar has hoped that the film festival can host discussions on meaningful issues and formulate conservation strategies.
  • Climate and Environment Head of the Department at the German Embassy to India, Taina Dyckhoff said the bilateral cooperation between India and Germany has been very successful in Environment and Wetlands conservation. She said that film is an impactful tool to discuss such issues with the public.

PM-RKVY And Krishonnati Yojana

  • Union Cabinet has recently approved the Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare’s proposal to consolidate various Centrally Sponsored Schemes (CSS) into two main umbrella schemes: the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (PM-RKVY) and the Krishonnati Yojana (KY).
  • This strategic move aims to promote sustainable agriculture through PM-RKVY and enhance food security and agricultural self-sufficiency via KY. With a total proposed expenditure of ₹1,01,321.61 crore, these schemes will be executed by State Governments, ensuring continuity and effective implementation of existing initiatives.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Banjara Virasat Museum in Pohardevi at Washim in Maharashtra, celebrating the rich heritage of the Banjara community.
