- Francis Halzen is particularly known for his important role in developing the scientific concept behind the IceCube Neutrino Observatory.
- Neutrinos are extremely light and electrically neutral subatomic particles. They are often described as “ghost particles” because they interact very weakly with matter. Enormous numbers of neutrinos pass through the human body every second without producing any noticeable effect.
- High-energy neutrinos provide scientists with an important way to study some of the most powerful phenomena and objects in the universe. These include:
- Active galactic nuclei
- Supermassive black holes
- Exploding stars
- Gamma-ray bursts
- Other high-energy cosmic accelerators
- The study of these particles helps scientists investigate energetic processes occurring far beyond Earth and provides valuable information about the high-energy universe.
